Useful tips: the best neighborhoods to stay

New York is a really big city, with an extension of 783,8 sq km and more than 8 million inhabitants! IS' divided in turn into 5 districts: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Staten Island, Queens and The Bronx.

The best district to stay in is definitely Manhattan, but also the most expensive, because here are the main attractions such as the Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center with the Top of The Rock, Times Square and Central Park, not to mention the many museums, shops and events. In turn Manhattan it can be divided into multiple zones and districts, but is generally divided into Uptown, Midtown and Downtown.

In Manhattan there are also cheap solutions: hostels, but you will have to make some compromises. If, on the other hand, you want a large and private room, with its own bathroom, for cheaper accommodations we can recommend the boroughs of Brooklyn and Long Island, in Queens. The latter is particularly far from Manhattan and you will have to use the subway every day! Staying in Manhattan, you can move to the Harlem neighborhood. For those traveling with children we recommend quieter neighborhoods, like the residential ones on the Upper West Side and Upper East Side.

  • Recommended areas to save: Long Island City, borough of Brooklyn, borough of Harlem

New York area guide

New York, as already mentioned, it is divided into 5 districts: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Staten Island, Queens and The Bronx. However, we do not recommend choosing accommodation in Staten Island and The Bronx, while for Queens you can opt for Long Island City. For Brooklyn, choose the westernmost part, the one near the famous Brooklyn Bridge.

Manhattan is the best district to sleep in, for its proximity to attractions and, above all, for the wide tourist offer! Moreover, even if it is impossible to visit all of New York on foot, by staying in Manhattan it will be possible to walk around the neighborhoods and reach some attractions by walking. The neighborhoods of this district are really numerous, but they are grouped into three large areas, each of which with its own characteristics and different accommodation facilities:

  1. Uptown Manhattan: the northernmost part, here are the Upper West Side, the Upper East Side and the Harlem district. It develops around Central Park going north
  2. Midtown Manhattan: the heart of the district, includes attractions such as Times Square, the MoMa, the Empire State Buildinge and Rockefeller Center
  3. Lower Manhattan: the southernmost part includes neighborhoods such as Greenwich Village, Soho and Tribeca. Here is also the heart of the financial district, with Wall Street and the World Trade Center

Areas to avoid: although New York is a huge city, it is still very safe. However, there are areas in which it is better to avoid staying and which in any case are off the tourist trail, so in any case the offer is very low. We therefore advise against the South Bronx, where it is recommended to move carefully even during the day, and East Brooklyn (the attractions and main accommodations are concentrated in the western part). In general, at night it is recommended to pay attention in all the more peripheral areas.

Uptown Manhattan / Upper West Side, Upper East Side, Harlem

Uptown Manhattan is the northernmost part of the borough of Manhattan. Here you will find the Upper West Side and Upper East Side neighborhoods, divided by Central Park, and further north the neighborhood of Harlem.

E' an area recommended especially for families, as it is mainly residential. It is also excellent for quickly reaching Central Park, ideal to visit with children thanks to the many activities to do, such as the Central Park Zoo or, in winter, the skating rink. In this area there are also important museums and it is well served by the subway. Thanks to the many stations, located in strategic points and near the main attractions, you can move quickly throughout Manhattan!

The Harlem neighborhood is suitable if you are on a budget. Here it is easier to find slightly larger offers and rooms. Also in this case, moving to other areas of Manhattan will be very simple thanks to the efficient subway and bus service!

The average prices in the neighborhood range from about € 70,00 for low cost accommodations to € 400,00 for high budget solutions - compare the selection of the best accommodations on booking

Recommended accommodations

Midtown Manhattan / Times Square, Broadway

Midtown Manhattan is the heart of New York. Here you will find Times Square, Broadway, Rockefeller Center and the Empire State Building, one of the symbols of NYC.

There is no shortage of shops, restaurants and clubs, as well as discos and bars open all night! IS' the ideal place to stay if you want to be central and close to everything. Of course the prices are slightly higher, but you can also find excellent low cost solutions in hostels, for the most part very clean and organized, and here there are many, especially suitable for young children! We always advise you, before choosing an accommodation, to also read the reviews left by previous guests! obviously there is also no shortage of super luxurious options, with incredible views of New York and prices from € 600,00 per night!

The average prices in the neighborhood range from about € 75,00 for low cost accommodations to € 600,00 for high budget solutions - compare the selection of the best accommodations on booking

Recommended accommodations

Lower Manhattan / Greenwich Village, Soho, Tribeca

Lower Manhattan is the southern part of the borough! This is above all the financial heart of New York for the presence of Wall Street and the World Trade Center, where the Twin Towers once stood, today you can visit the 9/11 Memorial here.

This area of Manhattan is too great for choosing accommodation and you will have a really great offer: the neighborhoods themselves in this part of the district are very different from each other! Greenwich Village, ideal for families, or Soho and Tribeca, artistic districts full of designer shops and art galleries, more suitable for couples. Soho, above all, is a very expensive neighborhood to live too, so the prices here are very high.

If you stay in this area you can easily reach many attractions: the subway will take you to both Midtown and Upper Manhattan. Ferries also depart from here to reach the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. The subway station to get to the terminal is South Ferry Station!

The average prices in the neighborhood range from about € 75,00 for low cost accommodations to € 600,00 for high budget solutions - compare the selection of the best accommodations on booking

Recommended accommodations

Borough of Queens / Long Island City

Staying outside of Manhattan is not a great choice, as you risk losing a lot of precious time traveling by subway or public transport. But if you want to know a different area, perhaps quieter and at the same time with excellent connections, then we recommend Long Island City! It is located in the borough of Queens and is chosen as it is has much cheaper prices!

Long Island City is located in the westernmost part of Queens and is bathed by the East River. From its shore you can admire the wonderful New York skyline. Here the accommodation facilities are very many, so you will have no problem finding something for your needs. Moreover, links to Manhattan are excellent: You can also get to the opposite bank of the river by ferry that connects Hunters Point South, Long Island, and East 34th Street, Manhattan. Plus, the purple subway 4 connects Vernon Boulevard-Jackson Avenue Station to Bryant Park Station, a short walk from Times Square

The average prices in the neighborhood range from about € 55,00 for low cost accommodations to € 250,00 for high budget solutions - compare the selection of the best accommodations on booking

Countries near New York where to stay

Being a very large city, made up of 5 large districts, sleeping in nearby cities is not recommended, as it would take a very long time to reach the attractions you intend to visit.

Nor should the cost of public transport to reach Manhattan be underestimated! There are several subscriptions that will save you money, but the expense is still high! Also, after a long day walking through the streets of New York, it could be particularly stressful and tiring to take more than an hour on public transport to reach your accommodation!

However, a viable alternative is Jersey City, New Jersey, right on the border with the state of New York and in the Liberty State Park area, where the Statue of Liberty is located. This area is not part of New York, but there are attractions to visit anyway, like the Hoboken neighborhood! There are also numerous accommodations to choose from, from hotels to hostels. To reach Manhattan then you can take the metro, buses or the ferry which crosses the Hudson River - Hotels and b & bs starting from € 80,00 per room
