Eastern Sicily

1 - Marina di Ragusa - Province of Ragusa

A town full of life and entertainment, that's what Marina di Ragusa is. In this town overlooking the sea you can do many different activities, ranging from visiting the seafront, which divides the town from the beach, or taking a bath in its waters, suitable for children given the shallow depth.
Furthermore, a few kilometers away you can visit Ragusa Ibla, among baroque jewels, panoramic stairways, gardens.

Do not miss the Donnafugata Castle (15 km from Ragusa), a blast from the past with period clothing, furnishings and armor that will transport the children into a real fairy tale!
finally, for a dip in nature, move to the nearby Irminio River Nature Reserve, an uncontaminated oasis where you can get to know endemic species such as the macrostigma trout and the nutria, also called Water Beaver.

2 - Gioiosa Marea - Province of Messina

In the province of Messina you will find one of the favorite places for families with children: Gioiosa Marea. Wide beaches mixed with sand and pebbles, many villages for families, calm waters and mild temperatures are its business card. Here, besides relaxing by the sea and visiting the natural beauties around the resort, there is not much to do. Take advantage of it for a relaxing stay and more!

3 - Fontane Bianche - Province of Syracuse

It is located a few km from Syracuse, famous for its very shallow waters and the bathing establishments that make it ideal for relaxing and entertaining children in complete safety. Precisely this conformation allows the beaches of Fontane Bianche to be among the most loved in Sicily.

In addition to the beaches, it is also ideal for its strategic position, which allows you to visit some of the most beautiful places in Eastern Sicily in a few kilometers. Visit the village of Marzamemi (38 km), a favor that overlooks the sea with a beautiful square and mazes of streets in which to chase each other.

4 - Marina di Noto - Syracuse

Among the most suitable places for children I cannot miss the coasts of Noto and its maritime hamlet, Marina di Noto. Located about 10 km from the main city, the seaside village is excellent if you want to spend a few days in absolute tranquility. The main feature of this area are its particularly warm waters and very shallow bottoms even for tens of meters, particularly suitable even for younger children. In addition, the wide and fine sandy beach is excellent for long walks.

Make full use of its strategic position: from here you can visit the whole province of Syracuse, starting from Noto itself (8 km), the capital of Sicilian Baroque. A few km away there is the wonderful Vendicari nature reserve (10 km), with unspoiled beaches and nature. For a day of pure fun, head to Aretusa Park (40 km), a water park with slides, pools and attractions for everyone!

5 - Marina di Modica - Ragusa

Marina di Modica is the maritime fraction of the most famous Modica. Excellent for children, given its wide beach of fine sand, both free and with bathing establishments, every year attracts hundreds of tourists who love to practice water sports or enjoy the beautiful landscapes made up of sunsets over the sea and lush vegetation.

Here too you can alternate days at sea with the exploration of the city of Modica: take your children to the chocolate museum (€ 2,50)! You will find incredible chocolate sculptures, even a map of the whole city, and you will discover the history and flavors of the Aztec recipe for Modica chocolate.

For a day in nature, go to the Parcallario (70 km - € 2,00), the adventure park surrounded by greenery, between routes, climbing and ziplines even for the little ones!
Finally, if you are a Camilleri lover (but even if you are not), you can take a tour of the places of Inspector Montalbano and discover in a few kilometers the most beautiful places in the Val di Noto.

Western Sicily

1 - Porto Palo di Menfi - Province of Agrigento

Blue flag and green flag beaches, precisely the recognition of the Italian pediatricians association that recognizes the child-friendly beaches! This is how Porto Palo di Menfi looks like, a wide beach and a crystalline sea, perhaps a little cold, but with a shallow seabed that is optimal for children. The area is also full of areas equipped with various activities even for the little ones, and also parking lots.

In fact, close to the beach there are playgrounds and rides, ideal beaches for children. Even many restaurants on the beach are equipped with play areas for the enjoyment of children and ... relaxation for adults!

2 - San Vito Lo Capo - Province of Trapani

Located between the Zingaro Nature Reserve and that of Monte Cofano, the beach of San Vito Lo Capo is beloved by tourists and islanders thanks to its crystal clear waters, and it is considered by many to be the most beautiful in all of Sicily. The beaches and tourist facilities make it particularly suitable for families with children, who can also have fun in different areas designed for them. If you want something more natural, you can always take advantage of the large free beach.

The town in summer becomes a riot of bars, restaurants, activities, international festivals such as the Cous Cous Fest or the Kite Festival: you can't get bored! You can visit it in tandem, by rickshaw, and taste the delicious cous cous and the "caldofreddo", a typical dessert.

If you love trekking, the Zingaro Nature Reserve is one of the most enchanting places in Sicily! The trek, however, is challenging, so if you are not used to it, better choose one boat tour among the coves and the seabed of the reserve!

3 - Tre Fontane - Province of Trapani

Recognized as one of the most suitable beaches for children, the beach of Tre Fontane is located a few km from Selinunte, and is a natural jewel. A large beach of fine sand that plunges into warm and very shallow waters for hundreds of meters are the main features of this place.

4 - Castellammare del Golfo - Province of Trapani

The municipality of Castellammare del Golfo has some of the most beautiful beaches in Sicily. A coast made up of stretches of fine sand and others of rock, manages to please everyone. You can opt for free and more reserved areas, or for beaches that offer all possible comforts for parents and children.
Le recommended beaches are those of Guidaloca (Get directions), the city beach of Castellammare del Golfo (Get directions) and La Plaja (Get directions).

The country is also splendid: a succession of beams, courtyards, panoramic stairways with bars and restaurants right on the wide stairs, marinas full of nightlife and a wide pedestrian avenue with shops and stalls of all kinds! Even just walking around on foot will be a wonderful adventure.

The location is exceptional, in the center of the homonymous gulf: you can go practically anywhere in a few km! From the Zingaro Nature Reserve, by trekking or by boat, to Segesta and Erice, and even to Palermo and Mondello, which are only 60 km away!

5 - Cefalù - Province of Palermo

Cefalù is one of the favorite destinations of Sicily. In addition to the beautiful beaches, with the city promenade also ideal for children, the country is a gem. The two main streets that run parallel one above the other are a succession of artisan shops, wine bars, churches, historic buildings. If you are sporty enough, you can climb to the top of the Rocca di Cefalù, a nice hike up a cliff at 268 meters where the Temple of Diana is located and you will enjoy a crazy view!

Sicilian Islands

1 - Favignana - Province of Trapani

Favignana is one of the most popular islands when it comes to children. Its numerous beaches made up of fine sand and crystal clear water are ideal for the little ones, who can venture out into the sea without fear. Furthermore, the strong presence of children has allowed the accommodation facilities to create various activities dedicated to children.

To be honest, many of the coves are really difficult to reach with children in tow, but others like Cala Azzurra are perfect for families!
In any case, you can visit the island and also the nearby Levanzo with a mini cruise, to also see caves and coves and make stops for swimming and diving.

Another feature of the island are the Hypogeum Gardens, tuff quarries transformed into lush Mediterranean gardens.

2 - Vulcano - Province of Messina

A valid alternative to Lipari, the island of Vulcano offers beautiful black sand beaches, thermal pools and reasonable prices. If you want to spend a holiday in total relaxation with your children, let us have a thought, even if compared to the others it requires more time to reach it.
On the one hand you can take your children to live an adventure practically in a volcano, on the other hand we must admit that in some places the smell of sulfur becomes strong and could be annoying. In any case, it could be a great day trip if you are staying in one of the Aeolian Islands and the Messina coast.

3 - Salina - Province of Messina

Salina is the second largest island of the Aeolian Islands, and also one of the most suitable for families. The strong point are the accommodation facilities that are particularly suitable when it comes to children.

The island has several trekking routes, to visit the Fossa delle Felci or Monte dei Porri, which however can be challenging with children in tow. Better visit the prehistoric village of Portella, in the eastern part of the island, not far from Santa Marina Salina. Here are the remains of huts dating back to the Bronze Age, as well as a beautiful view of the sea.

You can also visit the small fishing villages of Malfa, Leni and Rinella, and identify the places of the film "Il Postino" by Massimo Troisi in Pollara.

4 - Pantelleria - Province of Trapani

Pantelleria is an island full of initiatives and comforts, especially for families with children. You will find numerous beaches suitable for children, with shallow waters and smooth rocks, which will allow you to easily get out of the water. In addition, the many natural pools are excellent for those who do not want to go into the open sea. Among these, the suggestive swimming pool known as Mirror Lake of Venus it is the most famous, also because of its heart shape.

Together with your children you can identify one of the symbols of Pantelleria, the Arco dell'Elefante, a rock of lava stone that owes its name to its strange shape, which resembles the trunk of an elephant.
The recommended beach is Cala Gadir, on the north eastern coast of the island; here there are natural hot water pools, directly carved into the rock, the perfect place to relax; easily accessible, thanks also to the large on-site parking and the nearby accommodation facilities.

5 - Lampedusa - Province of Trapani

Among the southernmost islands of Sicily, Lampedusa cannot be missed, with its beaches of fine sand and a seabed that becomes gently deep. Lampedusa is famous for its well-equipped facilities, excellent for children, and for a relaxing holiday. The island also has several free beaches, reachable in a short time on foot.

In Lampedusa you can bring your children to visit the Turtle Hospital: it is a structure that treats turtles rescued at sea from nets, plastics and other environmental threats, and then returns them to their habitat. It is a very exciting awareness-raising experience.
