An itinerary on the east coast of the United States almost certainly includes a stop in Washington DC. While big American cities have something to offer for each season, knowing the weather can help you figure out which period is right for you or if there is one to avoid. The District of Columbia, nestled between Virginia and Maryland, features a particular semi-continental climate, with notable differences from one season to another: let's analyze them in detail.

The Climate of Washington DC

The US capital is located at about the same latitude as the Strait of Messina, but the climate is very different from that of our South. The District of Columbia, located on the banks of the Potomac River, not far from its mouth, is affected by the proximity to the ocean, which gives it a very humid climate throughout the year. The Atlantic, however, is very different from the Mediterranean and, as happens a little further north for nearby New York City, the warm current of the gulf is not enough to shield the cold from the north when it decides to come down from Canada during the winter. and whitewash the surrounding green hills.

Winter

From December to February, the cold makes itself felt. After the summer, the Christmas period is the one in which your visit to the United States will be most likely, also because living the Christmas experience in New York is a unique emotion and a tour of the main cities on the Atlantic cannot be linked to us. than be a great idea. Precisely for this reason, it is good to equip yourself as best as possible, because although it is located 300km further south of the Big Apple, even in Washington the winter temperatures they can be very rigid. Normally, the minimums remain close to zero and the maximum about 8 degrees, but the meteorological instability is particularly disturbing.

The cold wind and snowfalls are common and they may come between the visitor and his urge to stroll along the National Mall, but are equally frequent sunny days they offer a welcoming and warm city even in winter. Every winter, about 40 centimeters of snow fall, but every 4-5 years there are sudden waves of frost with peaks as low as -15 ° and snowstorms capable of slowing down many activities. Fortunately, as in other major cities in North America, they are also perfectly equipped to cope with drastic situations.

Spring

Spring is one very unstable season, as indeed in much of the east coast. As the weeks go by and the days get longer, the average temperatures increase and already in April it is possible to reach and exceed 20 degrees. At the same time, the spring warmth can be affected by some return of cold and it is not impossible to witness some snowfall in March. March is “crazy” here too, you know, and also offers some advantages.

At the beginning of the 900th century the city of Tokyo donated a large number of Japanese cherry trees to Washington, which at the end of March began the famous flowering, which ends in mid-April. The show is so impressive that the National cherry blossom festival has been established. The best place to observe this phenomenon is certainly from the Jefferson Memorial. May it is a hot month, in which isolated days of rain or refreshing breezes can arise, but it is more likely to find a climate tending to summer. It is certainly one of the best months to enjoy the city from a climate point of view.

Summer

Hot and muggy: this is to be expected when visiting Washington between June and August. After all, conditions are not too different from many Italian locations, with minimums around 20 degrees and maximums around 30. Sometimes, heat waves can cause over 35 degrees, but they don't happen too frequently. More probable are i sudden thunderstorms: it is not uncommon to wake up in the morning with the bright sun, spend the day complaining of the sultry heat and in the mid-afternoon unexpectedly having to get an umbrella. In general this geographic area is rather rainy and Washington is no exception: in the warm months it is difficult to encounter weeks of rain, but be prepared for some downpours!

Autumn

Autumn is perhaps the best season to travel to Washington DC, although it is rarely considered for a trip to the States. The advantage of the months between September and November is that they are the mildest of the year: the stifling heat is gone and the chill of winter is yet to come, but above all the weather is more stable than in the rest of the year. Of course, it can rain even in October, but the autumn months are those with less rainfall and in October the average temperature is between 10 and 20 degrees: optimal for visiting a metropolis.

When to go to Washington DC?

The contrast between the whiteness of the White House and the orange-red leaves that cover the lawns is in itself reason enough to choose autumn to visit Washington, not to mention the Rock Creek Park, where the riot of colors on the trees gives the impression of entering a painting. But autumn, as I already mentioned, is also the period when the "naughty" climate of this area stabilizes more, favoring a more peaceful visit.

But as happens in other big cities, there is something to see and something to do for every season: if a shower takes you by surprise in August or a snowfall does not allow you to be outdoors in January, you will surely find a indoor activities that will meet your expectations.
