Vienna is a very interesting city from several points of view. It owes its charm to the Danube river that crosses it and creates a particular atmosphere, and to the many historic buildings that were the residence of important families such as the Habsburgs. Not to mention the presence of influential personalities such as Mozart, Beethoven and Freud, who have left a rich artistic and intellectual, and above all musical, heritage. In short, Vienna is a city to be discovered and visited! Let's see together when it's best to go there and what you will find interesting in the city.

Climate, Average Temperatures and Precipitation

  • Best time: from April to September, with preference for May, June and September (to avoid the summer storms of July and August). Vienna is always enjoyable, but in these months the days are long and the temperatures pleasant. The Christmas period is also recommended
  • Period to avoid: from November to February. Snowfalls and frosts can be frequent, and the amount of sunshine is scarce. But at Christmas it is beautiful

Vienna enjoys a better climate than other Austrian cities, thanks to its location in a flat area rather than in the mountains, like much of Austria. The climate in Vienna is continental and has cold winters with temperatures just below zero, hot and often sultry summers, fairly mild springs and autumns. As for rainfall, they are distributed throughout the year, but unfortunately they are more present in summer.
However, the best time to visit the city is from April to September, when the days are hot and temperatures exceed 20 ° C, despite frequent rains.

When to go to Vienna: the cheapest period

February and March are the absolute best months for a low cost trip, that is, immediately after the Christmas events and just before the arrival of the summer, during which the tourist influx is greater. The winter period under the holidays and the summer period are the most expensive.

Vienna in Spring

Vienna is a city rich in art, but during the spring its strong point are the parks and gardens in bloom. Some of the places you will appreciate the most, thanks to the colors from spring, will be the Schonbrunn Palace, the Danube-Auen National Park and the Burggarten Gardens. In the latter you can also admire the Mozart statue, the butterfly house and the palm house.

Vienna in the Summer

Despite the rainy days, Vienna lends itself perfectly to visits during the summer, taking advantage of its hot days to wander around to discover the city and its most important buildings. Do not miss the Vienna Cathedral, the Belvedere Castle, the Hofburg Castle, the Mozart House, and a ride on the historic Ferris wheel in the Prater, from which you will admire all the beauty of Vienna from above.

Vienna in Autumn

Autumn in Vienna is full of music and dance. From November begins the Ball Season, during which, in the most important buildings of the city, traditional dances are held such as the Viennese waltz. If, on the other hand, you go to Vienna in early autumn, you can take advantage of the last summer heat to take an evening cruise along the Danube and admire buildings and works of art on the banks.

Vienna in Winter

In winter Vienna is enriched with lights and traditions. If you go to Vienna during the winter, choose the Christmas period during which there is no shortage of classics Christmas markets and then on New Year's Eve you will witness the Viennese waltz danced through the streets of the center. You can also opt for the concert in the golden hall of the Musikverein Palace.

How to dress: what to pack

  • In winter: winter clothing, therefore underwear, boots, jacket and thermal, padded and waterproof clothing, to protect you from the cold, rain and snow. And finally don't forget the umbrella!
  • In summer: in addition to being hot it often rains, so bring light clothing such as t-shirts, shorts and sandals, but don't forget to bring jeans, long-sleeved shirts, closed shoes and a jacket. Umbrella is a must.
  • In autumn and spring: In these two seasons it is neither too hot nor too cold, so classic mid-season clothing will do just fine. Also bring a couple of sweaters and a spare pair of t-shirts, in case of unexpected weather.
