Climate, Average Temperatures and Precipitation

  • Best time: from December to March, ie late winter and early spring. Lucerne is a winter destination, ideal for those who love snowy landscapes and snow sports.
  • Period to avoid: in general, summer is the worst season, due to frequent rainfall

Lucerne has a continental-alpine climate, characterized by a rainy season, corresponding to the months of late spring and summer, and a drier season during autumn and winter. Temperatures are mild in summer and cold in winter.

When to go to Lucerne: the cheapest period

We assume that Lucerne is certainly not a low cost destination at any time of the year.
The cheapest period is summer, as it is the wettest season. The temperatures will also be more pleasant, but in fact the frequent rain makes it difficult to organize travel programs and excursions.

A good compromise to save something is the end of the winter season, that is the second half of March.

Lucerne in Spring

The meteorological spring in Lucerne runs from 1st March to 31st May. In this period it is not uncommon to encounter some showers, even stormy ones, and banks of thick fog, which give the already marked romantic atmosphere that extra touch. The rays of the sun that filter through the curtain of fog illuminating the lake are a characteristic spectacle that makes the walks on Lake Quattro Cantoni. Ideal this season to dedicate yourself to guided tours of the city (from € 16,00), which in a couple of hours show the highlights and provide an overview of the place.

In this period, thanks to the rising temperatures, nature awakens, the landscape regains its particular colors, and it is possible to see Lucerne in its full guise as a Swiss city. To revive the city atmosphere there is the famous Lucerne Carnival (which usually ends around March 5) with its parades and cheerful music, while the annual International Comics Festival is held in April, which every year presents the art of comics with characters from the avant-garde and independent scene.

Lucerne in the Summer

The Lucerne summer runs from 1st June to 31st August, with sharply rising temperatures. In this period nature is in full splendor, and you can best appreciate it by taking part in one of the excursions to the Pilatus and Rigi mountains (from € 90,00), from where you can admire a wonderful panorama. The Kirschstrasse, which goes from Lucerne to discover the landscape of cherry trees, also gives its best in this period.

Two of the most important Swiss musical events take place in July and August: the Blue Balls Festival, held around the lake and in the KKL clubs, where stars of the international scene perform, and the Luzernfest, which every year brings to the city in addition to music, stands on the banks of the lake and an extraordinary fireworks , even thousands of spectators from all over Switzerland.

Lucerne in Autumn

Autumn in Lucerne runs from September 30st to November th, and the city changes its appearance once again. The woods are dressed in bright colors, the foliage creaks under the feet and the light of different intensity, highlights all the treasures of nature. In this period the temperatures are lowering, but the climate is however suitable for excursions in the mountains or trips on the lake on foot or by boat, which allow you to better appreciate the spectacle of colors taking place.

In November each year, culture and music fans await the Lucerne Blues Festival, held at the Grand Casino in Lucerne.

Lucerne in Winter

Winter in Lucerne begins on December 1, when the city begins to turn white, and ends on 28 February, the day which coincides with the start of the Lucerne Carnival. In this period, fun in the snow is guaranteed. The winter sports areas offer all their variety: ski and snowboard slopes, toboggan runs, cross-country ski runs, snowshoe trails and nature walks.

From the end of November, the city of Lucerne is already festively decorated for Christmas, and in front of the KKL center "Live on Ice" is inaugurated: the party-lit ice rink.
