Shenzhen is a modern metropolis that has over 15 million inhabitants: the impact with such a large reality is both fascinating and alienating for travelers arriving from Italy. The atmosphere that reigns in the streets of the city is engaging: in 35 years a small Chinese fishing village has turned into an agglomeration of skyscrapers and businessmen, who populate the streets and buildings of this area of China, which borders Hong Kong and has 70km of coastline.

Shenzhen is a very big city. Our path will mainly unfold in Nanshan district, where you can start your day with a Chinese-style breakfast at Nansen Chinese Restaurant: rice, shrimp, stewed lettuce accompanied by excellent tea will give you the right energy to start your trip. Let's start the visit from the Splendid China area where the most important Chinese historical sites are reproduced in miniature: the perfect way to see the whole Chinese wall, even if small instead of big! In this way you can take a complete tour of China, discovering its different architectural types depending on the geographical area of reference.

To immerse yourself even more in Chinese culture, visit the China Folk Culture Village: it will allow you to stroll through 26 villages perfectly reproduced in life size and experience the life of the 56 different ethnic groups that make up the Chinese. You will be immersed in typical shows, craft exhibitions and cultural festivals that will allow you to take a dip in the different cultures that coexist in China: it is very educational, especially if children are traveling with you.

One day itinerary in Shenzhen: Afternoon

1 - Tien Hou Temple in Chiwan

The Chinese don't have a proper lunch: they usually have a quick snack. The nearby Starbucks is really for you: you can sit comfortably at one of its tables and have a sandwich or a slice of cake enjoying a good coffee, Italian or American, without any rush. You will reach it by crossing Shenna Ave and going up Santoun str.
Recharge your batteries, you can call a taxi and be taken to Sea World: a huge shopping mall in the shape of a cruise ship. Do not visit the center but walk for 10 minutes until you reach the Tien Hou Temple in Chiwan, first built during the Song dynasty and then rebuilt several times over the centuries, maintaining its ancient flavor. Admission costs around € 20 and allows you to enter any building, climb each level and visit the drum tower. Although taking photographs is allowed, remember that you are inside a sacred place, still in use. One day itinerary in Shenzhen: Evening

1 - Dinner, Shenzhenwan Park View Bridge Park

In China you dine early, so after your visit to the temple, you can go down to Sea World: you will be inspired by an infinite choice of restaurants. Go to LiWai InOut for a modern vibe and traditional food. Do not miss the fish dishes with particular attention to shrimp (the cost of a dinner per person is about € 25). The peculiarity of Asian meals is that there is no order of consumption of the dishes as we are used to in Europe: we eat everything together, passing from one dish to another, and then returning to the previous one. Don't miss the pork and shrimp and, of course, use chopsticks. The cost is around € 25 per person.
After your dinner, take a walk along the coast and reach Shenzhenwan Park View Bridge Park to admire the illuminated bridge that connects the city to Hong Kong.

Before leaving: useful tips

  • visa: if you are in Hong Kong it is good to know that the Hong Kong visa is not valid for the rest of China. However, you can do it at the border, but the queues to get an entry visa are so long that you risk losing the day: it is better to leave home with the visa already done
  • clothing: bring light clothing suitable for the season, this area of China boasts a subtropical climate with mild winters and very hot and scorching summers. Bring with you a light sweatshirt or a scarf to use indoors, where the air conditioning is usually very high, comfortable sneakers and a k-way or rain poncho (especially if you travel between May and September, you will meet the season of rains)
  • beware of pickpockets and bad guys: the petty crime rate is high in this country
  • bargain: if you stop shopping at small local vendors, always negotiate the price. They will tell you a very high figure, you set a maximum figure in your head and you start going down; if they do not accept the maximum amount you have set, go away: they will call you back to conclude the sale
  • countryside house.: If you decide to extend your stay and enjoy the nightlife, you can consult our offers for accommodation in Shenzhen.

What not to see: the attractions that are better to give up

Shenzhen covers an area of 2050 sq km, visiting it in one day is almost impossible. Among the attractions not to be taken into consideration, we remember:

  1. Sea World is a shopping mall and not an aquarium
  2. Nanhai E-Cool, former Sanyo headquarters converted into creative workshops
  3. Windows of the World, miniatures of the main attractions of the world (including pizza dei Miracoli in Pisa and Piazza San Maco in Venice)
  4. Happy Valley, a huge playground
  5. Tea Stream Valley, a fascinating place but too far away
