One day itinerary in Santorini: Morning

1 - Fira

Let's start with coffee, ice cream, pastries and croissants at the Zotos Family Pastry (€ 5,00).
The capital Fira it is easily recognizable thanks to the sunny alleys, the white houses and the classic Cycladic architecture of its buildings. In addition to offering dreamy panoramic views, it can be reached by boat from Porto Vecchio, which is still worth a visit, perhaps on the back of a mule, as is customary among the inhabitants of the locality. Also worthy of note are its museums, in particular the archaeological one, which can be reached on foot from the central square of the capital in just two minutes. An important piece of the town's history, which should be admired in the morning, avoiding rush hours and the inevitable queues.

2 - Firostefani and Imerovigli

Firostefani it is rightly considered a district of Fira, reachable on foot from the capital in just one kilometer. The glimpse that we can admire when reaching this village is absolutely dreamlike. To reach Imerovigli - 3 kilometers from Fira - it is necessary to have a means of transport and take the road from Agiou Athanasiou and Epar.Od. Firon-Ias leads to the village. Built on top of the caldera, a About 300 meters above sea level, offers a perfect view of the majestic volcanoes of the island. The main attraction of the resort is the Skaros fortress, one of the five most important strongholds of the island of which currently only a rock with a chapel to the north, called Agios Ioannis Apokefalistheis, remains.

In summary:

  • Distance traveled: 3,7 km / 11 min
  • Places visited: Fira, Archaeological Museum of Fira (€ 3,00), Firostefani, Imerovigli, Skaros Fortress (free)
  • Useful tickets: Morning Caldera Cruise, Santorini Day Tour
  • Where to have breakfast: Zotos Family Pastry, Gold Street - Fira

One day itinerary in Santorini: Afternoon

1 - Red Beach

Staying in Santorini even for just one day necessarily implies at least a couple of hours on the beach, for a regenerating bath and to guarantee a screaming tan! Among the countless beautiful beaches of Santorini we opted for the more "worldly" Red Beach, the famous one red beach of Santorini, famous for its cliffs and its rust-colored sand. From Imerovigli, Red beach can be reached in about half an hour by car along Epar.Od. Firon-Ormou Perissis (renting a vehicle can therefore become decisive during this tour).
Our choice to taste the typical dishes of Santorini a stone's throw from the sea falls on The Cave of Nikolas, just 50 meters from Red Beach. Highlights are the Greek salad, cod meatballs and feta-stuffed peppers. Spending around € 40,00 per person, it is possible to enjoy an appetizer, a salad and a main course.

2 - Akrotiri archaeological site

It is undoubtedly one of the main attractions of the island of Santorini. The archaeological site is just 5 minutes from the Red Beach and is pleasantly accessible to families as well. The path inside the excavations is facilitated by the presence of information signs, as essential in content as they are effective in explanation.

3 - Pyrgos / Monastery of the Prophet Elijah

Our afternoon in Santorini can only end with a fleeting visit to the ancient capital of Santorini, Pyrgos, located on the highest point of the island. Starting from Akrotiri Epar.Od. Firon-Ormou Perissis we reach the locality, from the top of which we will witness a more unique than rare view of the Aegean Sea. The main attraction of Pyrgos is the small monastery dedicated to the prophet Elijah, open Monday to Saturday to the public from 09:00 to 19:45.

In summary:

  • Distance traveled: 23,8 km / 53 min
  • Places visited: Red Beach, Akrotiri Archaeological Site (full € 12,00; reduced € 6,00), Pyrgos, Prophet Elias Monastery
  • Useful tickets: Guided tour to Akrotiri
  • Where to have lunch: The Cave of Nikolas, Akrotiri Beach

One day itinerary in Santorini: Evening

1 - Oia and Cena

We close our exclusive hour tour of Santorini with a visit to the charming town of Oia. The village can be reached by public transport or by car in just half an hour (avoid the three-hour walk from Pyrgos). We continue, therefore, from the north-west on Epar.Od. Firon-Ormou Perissis and we reach this small white oasis, with unmistakable and hyper photographed blue domes. The town, full of museums, shops and art galleries, is especially remembered for its marina - easily reachable on foot by taking one of the characteristic paths of the village - and the beaches of Ammoudi e Armenians. The first, made up entirely of stones, "boasts" a fairly steep path to reach it; the second, full of rocks, is a popular destination for lovers of snorkelling, also thanks to its warm waters.
Dining in a dream restaurant, with a magnificent view of the unforgettable sunset of Oia is possible thanks to Catch Bar - Restaurant, one of the hottest clubs in the village. The main courses of the restaurant are, of course, those based on fish - the sushi is very popular - all "washed down" by a glass of strictly island wine, one of the "top" products of the whole Santorini. A dinner at the Catch Bar - Restaurant costs between € 50,00 and € 70,00 per person, but it might really be worth the extra money to enjoy a breathtaking view, before saying goodbye to Oia and the whole pearl of the Aegean.

In summary:

  • Distance traveled: 19,7 km / 35 min
  • Places visited: Oia center, marina, Ammoudi and Armeni beaches
  • Useful tickets: Crater and sunset in Oia with boat trip
  • Where to dine: Catch Bar - Restaurant, Konstantinou Paleologlou, Oia

Before leaving: useful tips

To fully enjoy the beauty of the island, without limiting yourself to the classic selfies in the pool or the ordinance photos of the suggestive blue domes that characterize the houses and streets of Santorini, a few but important precautions are necessary:

  • Get up early to enjoy the beauties of the island;
  • Dress comfortably, always carrying a bathing suit;
  • Avoid particularly crowded beaches and attractions during rush hour or weekends; alternatively, go to these places early in the morning;
  • If possible, rent a means of transport to visit Santorini.
  • If you decide to extend your stay and enjoy Santorini by night, you can consult our accommodation offers in Santorini.

What not to see: the attractions that are better to give up

In just one day, it will not be possible to treat yourself to a "tour" of the most popular beaches on the island of Santorini. The choice of ForTravelAdviceLovers has fallen on Red Beach to the detriment of other dream locations, less busy and more accessible even to large groups and families, such as: Kamari, Perissa, White Beach, Vlychada. Again due to lack of time we had to give up a tour, as impressive as it is long, of Nea Kameni e Palea Kameni, the islets in the middle of the caldera, and of Thirasia.

  1. Kamari
  2. Perissa
  3. White Beach
  4. Vlychada
  5. Nea Kameni
  6. Palea Kameni
  7. Thirasia
