Since the Washington Monument stands out in the center of the National Mall I have decided to point out those monuments that are located at the top of the great "cross" of Washington DC.

    • Lincoln memorial: a doubly significant place for American history. In addition to being the memorial dedicated to one of the most famous American presidents, Martin Luther King delivered his famous speech I have a dream from its stairways.
    • jefferson memorial: built near an artificial lake, this memorial dedicated to the third president of the United States is renowned for the splendid panorama it offers to its visitors in the spring thanks to the flowering of the many cherry trees nearby.
    • United States Capitol: the United States Capitol is the place where the American Congress meets. It has the advantage of offering one of the most striking views of the National Mall and being one of the few government buildings that can be visited.
    • White House: the residence of the President of the United States and one of the most famous buildings in the world. You can discover all the events related to this symbolic place of American political power by reading our dedicated article.

A brief history of the Washington Monument

The construction of the monument began on July 4, 1848 and was inaugurated only on October 9, 1888, after the project was interrupted several times by both the lack of funds and the outbreak of the American Civil War.

Even today, if you pay the necessary attention, you can see the signs of these interruptions. Looking at the obelisk from a distance it is possible to distinguish two different shades of color in the marble that makes up the monument, indicating the different types of material that were used during the two different phases of construction.

The Washington Monument, throughout its history has also been the protagonist of a bloody event when in 1982 a deranged named Norman Mayer parked a vehicle at the base of the obelisk claiming it was full of explosives. The seizure of the monument ended tragically with the killing of Mayer and the discovery that no explosives were present in the vehicle.

    Where to sleep nearby

As mentioned we are at the center of the National Mall, the political core of the United States, and this helps keep hotel prices in its immediate vicinity fairly high. There are two neighborhoods that are particularly suitable for those who do not want to risk getting too far from this area: Downtown and Capitol Hill, which we described in our article on where to sleep in Washington DC.

If, on the other hand, you want to stay as close as possible to the Washington Monument, you can find some hotels in the area ofChild Plaza where the underground stop of the same name is also located.
