It was January 10, 1863 when the historic station was put into operation London underground of Baker Street, entered in the annals for having been the first subway ever. And the English capital boasts today the oldest underground railway line in the world.
Over the years, railway networks have been developed and implemented in all major European cities, but only thanks to scientific and engineering progress has it been possible to develop stations that are not only efficient and functional but also beautiful and fascinating from an aesthetic point of view.
We therefore present one Top 10 of the most beautiful stations: a list of the most enchanting metro stations of the old continent, the most evocative of all, which alone would justify a visit to the city ...



10 - Admiralteyskaya, St. Petersburg, Russia


The brand new station Admiralteyskaya of St. Petersburg reopened to the public on December 28, 2011 after a long period of renovation.
Really beautiful, it represents the perfect combination of classic style and modern design.

9 - Palais Royal / Musée Louvre, Paris, France


This station was completed in 2000 on the occasion of the centenary of the Parisian metro. It is one of the most particular architectural structures, unconventional but at the same time perfectly suited to the wonderful city of Paris.

8 - Fosteritos, Bilbao, Spain


The "Little Foster" was inaugurated on 11 November 1995, and today occupies the third step of the podium in the ranking of largest stations in Spain.
The name "Fosteritos", which in fact means little Foster, was chosen in honor of the architect who oversaw the project, the Englishman N.



7 - Bockenheimer Warte, Frankfurt, Germany


The entrance to the station was made by the architect Zbigniew Peter Pininski and it is one of the most fascinating in the world.
It was derived from a old disused wagon placed at an angle, capable of generating a suggestive optical effect. In fact, observing passers-by from the outside, one has the illusion that they enter the wagon!

6 - T-Centralen, Stockholm, Sweden


Right next to the top five we find the T-Centralen. This station is quite close to the Centrale but is, without a doubt, the most beautiful in the city, because of its bright colors that favor fantastic plays of light.
Curiosity: The T in the name is an abbreviation of Tunnelbana, the Swedish term used for the metro.

5 - Westminster, London, UK


As already said, the London Underground it can be considered as the oldest ancestor of all modern urban railway lines. Precisely for this reason, the futuristic design of the station Westminster it is almost a paradox.

4 - Olaias, Lisbon, Portugal


Olaias the podium is missing for only one position. It was the first Portuguese station, and continues to be among the most fabulous in the world, with its painted walls and ceiling of a thousand colors. In 1998, on the occasion of the Expo, over 11 million visitors were able to appreciate its characteristic ultra-modern style.



3 - Komsomolskaya, Moscow, Russia


Komsomolskaya Station it was opened in 1952 and is probably the most classic among the stations in the ranking. Its peculiarities are constituted by historical mosaics and by architectural features typical of the Baroque.

2 - Westfriedhof, Munich, Germany


It was inaugurated in 1998 but the aesthetic improvements that allowed it to emerge among the most beautiful stations were made only three years later.
Indeed, in 2001, the artist Ingo Maurer did install 11 gigantic lamps alternating blue, red and yellow colors. These bright colors, combined with the unpolished walls, make the underground environment absolutely magical.

1 - Toledo, Naples, Italy


Much to the surprise of many: the most beautiful metro station in Europe is located in Naples!
In fact, Toledo wins the gold medal for its unique charm. It was opened in 2012 following works that lasted for several years.
During the construction work, important ones were found underground archaeological finds, now preserved in the museum hall.
