Lake Vagli, in the heart of the Garfagnana,? was artificially formed in 1947 with the damming of the Edron stream and the consequent construction of a dam.

1 day

The dam, 92 meters high,? capable of containing over 30 million cubic meters of water, which are the same ones that today cover Fabbriche di Careggine, the ghost town submerged by the lake.
Yes, why? exactly where was it decided to build the pi? large hydroelectric basin in Tuscany, there was a village of blacksmiths and iron makers from Brescia. The village housed about thirty houses and just under 150 inhabitants, who were evacuated and transferred to the nearby Vagli Sotto, located on the promontory of the lake.

The plan was to re-emerge the ghost town from the waters every 10 years with the emptying of the dam, but until now? happened only four times: in 1958, 1974, 1983 and 1994. On these four occasions? It was possible for tourists to see the houses still standing, the bridge, the church of San Teodoro with its bell tower and the cemetery ... but this is not? the case today.
What I could see by visiting the lake of Vagli not? been for? less amazing. The landscape all around? wonderful, the vegetation is the host, allowing visitors to totally immerse themselves in this natural paradise.

Today the area has taken the name of Parco di Vagli, and? can be visited by purchasing a ticket at the cost of 2 ?. The visit consists of a tour around the perimeter of the lake that starts from a small area with some animals and continues towards the curious Park of Honor and Disgrace, inhabited by symbolic marble statues representing honorable and dishonorable characters (you will meet Schettino equipped with bunny ears, the police dog Diesel and, if you're lucky, even the unicorn with the suitcase).

Pi? ahead you can cross the suggestive Tibetan bridge in wood and steel, inaugurated in June 2016, and reach the promontory that hosts Vagli Sotto, a small and characteristic village.

Visit ? economic and very pleasant, it will allow you? to take a walk immersed in nature and to fantasize about "life" below the water. Also if you happen to be in the area in a period when the water level? pi? below you can hope to see what remains of the bell tower appear on the surface.
