It has been considered the most futuristic building in the world and is currently on display in New York, but this structure was not made by the hand of men. To build a new pavilion in midtown Manhattan, architect Neri Oxman actually employed 17.000 bachi and seta and the result is a real spectacle, a marvel for the eyes and the heart.

A bit of a scientist and a bit of an architect, Neri Oxman created the Silk Pavilion: it was 2013 and together with Mediated Matter researchers from MIT Media lab, the most futuristic building in the world came to life. A'organic architectural work composed of single threads of silk that does not impose itself on the environment but creates it. The Pavilion was not designed for nature, but from nature: the silkworms were trained to give up the cocoon to weave a usual surface that gave life to a masterpiece.

Symbol of biodesign, the building is currently on display at MoMa. His vision is intended to demonstrate to the internal world a new approach to construction in which humans interact with the natural system. Biologists, chemists and scientists gathered around Oxman's futuristic idea that using thematerial ecology revolutionized the concept of the building conceiving it as a habitat and natural organism.

In this sense, humans are only the tool for the realization of the architectural work because nature is the true engineer. And the Silk Pavilion proves it, yarn from silkworms released on a nylon frame inside the structure of a 3D printed dome.

All of Oxman's works represent an evolution of the concept of architecture because she explores materials and uses the natural world to extract and exploit the enormous potential of this. Starting from organic material, Neri Oxman and her team build through synthetic biology processes creations able to function and react to the outside world independently. Visionary, futuristic ideas, sometimes crazy but which surely upset the world as we know it.

Oxman is a true genius and the Silk Pavilion exhibited at the MoMA in New York can only confirm this.
