The markets of Formentera

Formentera too, as well as Ibiza, Mallorca and Menorca, has an important folkloric tradition which is reflected in the numerous markets that take place on the island during the week. One of the oldest and most characteristic is the hippie one, a must for visitors to the island.

In fact, in the 60s, some hippies decided to found a community in Formentera. Since then, there are many traces of a style and a philosophy of life that persist today. The hippie market in Formentera takes place in the characteristic central square of La Mola, where every Wednesday and every Sunday, from June to October starting at 16 pm, an evocative market is set up that recalls the hippie style. There are numerous stalls present, where you can find a little bit of everything, from handmade jewelry with precious and natural products by local artists, to costume jewelery items, hand-knitted wool sweaters and many other characteristic handicrafts.

Another interesting market is organized in the town of Es Pujols, the beating heart of the island and the most famous tourist resort of Formentera. Here, in fact, you will find the largest number of bars, restaurants and hotels. Also in this market it is possible to find hippies elements, together with local handicraft products. It is certainly less than the La Mola market, but equally picturesque and takes place every day from May to September, starting at 20pm, until midnight. Hence, it is the ideal place to stroll after dinner.

Among the other markets on the island there is also that of Savina, which takes place in July and August, every day, from 11 to 14 and from 17 to midnight, on the promenade near the port. An obligatory stop is also that of Sant Francesc Xavier, considered the most important urban center of the island. The town is most visited during the day, since in the central area every morning there is an evocative market where it is possible to find handicrafts, handmade jewelry, clothing and more.

Finally, another very suggestive market is that of the art that takes place in Sant Ferran de ses Roques, obligatory stop to go to La Mola or Es Pujols, open from May to October, every day from 19pm to midnight, except Wednesdays and Sundays.
