Uruguay is a buffer state between Brazil and Argentina famous for its green valleys devoted to pastures and sunny coasts. 10 - Tacuarembò

Inland city, Tacuarembò was formerly a center founded by the colonists who left Montevideo together with Colonel Rivera. At the beginning the city was called San Fruttuoso, in honor of the homonymous saint and today it has about 51.000 inhabitants. The area around the city is full of natural places, such as the Pozo Hondo, a canyon carved into the rock in which a steep waterfall is formed, reachable by a nature walk. To visit numerous and particular museums: the Ford vintage car museum, the museum dedicated to Carlos Gardel, an Argentine tango singer, Museo del Indio y del Gaucho, finally to see the Cathedral of San Fruttuoso.

9 - Rivera

Rivera is a city on the border with Brazil, and together with the city of Sant'Ana do Livramento, within the Brazilian border, it creates a large urban area that has a total of 200.000 inhabitants. The city of Rivera alone, however, has 64.000. The border therefore passes inside the urban agglomeration, in Plaza Internacional, where the two national flags face each other in front of an imposing commemorative obelisk. In the area there are some old mines to visit, in particular that, together with the ancient town, of Minas de Corrales. Other sites of interest: the Eduardo Cabrera racetrack and the Parque Gran Bretana.

8 - Las Piedras

Las Piedras is the most populous city in the Canelones district, north of Montevideo. It has about 70.000 inhabitants. In the area the vines are particularly famous and active, which are launching Uruguayan wines around the world. Here you can also visit the Pizzorno family winery and production, inside the Pizzorno Winery, or the Bodega Castillo Viejo. The Castillo de la Pilarica is worth a visit in the city, a candid white building dating back to the late 1700s which houses a historical museum. Also in the city there is the park of the battle of Las Piedras where General Artigas was the protagonist, where the memory of the places of conflict for the country's independence are preserved and kept alive.

7 - Paysandù

City on the river Uruguay, it divides its banks with Argentina, which is located just across the river. Paysandù has about 84.000 inhabitants and is a city in which to discover the history and life of the Uruguayan national hero José Artigas, hero of the Wars of Independence: here a very suggestive museum is dedicated to him, on the banks of the river where the life of the whole city takes place, and a bridge over the river. To visit the imposing Cathedral Basilica of Paysandù as well as the small town center. In the surrounding nature the city also hides some treasures: the Queguay waterfalls and the Guaviyu thermal baths.

6 - Colonia del Sacramento

Colonia del Sacramento it is the oldest city in Uruguay, located in the southern part, on the Rio de la Plata, the great estuary formed by the Uruguay and Paranà rivers that plunges into the Atlantic Ocean. On the same estuary, on the other side of the coast, is Buenos Aires. The city has nearly 22.000 inhabitants and it is a very peaceful place to take a dip in time. Like an authentic, old colony, its streets are still covered with cobblestones, the colonial and colorful buildings give the idea of ​​being in another era. Cologne is also a very popular seaside resort, in fact here there are over 5 km of coastline and the most famous beaches are Playa Honda and Playa el Alamo.

5 - Maldonado

Maldonado is located on the coast, 95 kilometers from Montevideo, and is an important port. The urban agglomeration is concentrated around Punta del Este, a well-known tourist resort. The city is mainly devoted to industry, in particular textiles and food, and is expanding, to date it has about 62.000 inhabitants. The city is remembered both for the passage of Giuseppe Garibaldi, in 1837, and for that of Charles Darwin, commemorated through a plaque in the place where he stayed, in the main square.

Maldonado has a beautiful sea, a small island to visit, some beaches and also many colonial buildings still well preserved, one of them being the old barracks Cuartel Dragones y de Blandengues. To visit, in Punta Ballena, the residence of the Uruguayan artist Carlos Paez Vilarò, known internationally, who spent the last years of his life here. Now, in addition to being a beautiful white building overlooking the sea, it is a museum and art meeting point for the whole country.

4 - Punta del Este

Punta del Este has always been the tourist resort of Uruguay, a place once frequented almost exclusively by the wealthiest families of Montevideo, in particular by artists, today it is still an exclusive and popular place but frequented by everyone and has become famous for the production of wine in the area. Punta del Este also boasts its own airport. Iconic is now the statue with the fingers of one hand sticking out of the sand on the beach of Playa Brava, the most famous of Punta del Este. This is a small town with just 10.000 inhabitants on the tip that stretches from Maldonado, and comes alive during the summer season, from November to March, hosting bathers and boats.

3 - Ciudad de la Costa

Ciudad de la Costa is located adjacent to Montevideo, by the sea, and with the capital it shares the Franklin Delano Roosevelt park, next to Lake Calcagno. It is a small town, very quiet compared to its neighbor, it has 84.000 inhabitants, ed it is known in particular for its green areas around the mouth of the Solis river, where the great Parque del Plata develops. In Ciudad de la Costa there are very large and sandy beaches to visit, the playa Pinar, playa Neptunia and Playa de Pinamar, the latter two beyond the mouth of the river. On the coast there is also the suggestive El Aguila fortress, an ancient construction that overlooks the ocean. To visit in the city the Aeronautical Museum and the zoological park.

2 - Jump

Salto is the second most populous city in Uruguay, with 105.000 inhabitants. It is located on the border with Argentina, right in front of the city of Concordia with which it divides the banks of the Uruguay River. On this watercourse there is the mammoth dam of Salto Grande, where there is also a spa town. The city is actually very dedicated to engineering: at the entrance there is a monument dedicated to the engineer Eladio Dieste, called La porta della Sapienza, and numerous other projects by Dieste populate Salto. In fact, the Museo de l'Hombre y la Tecnologia is also worth visiting. Salto was also the birthplace of the famous Uruguayan writer Horacio Quiroga.

1 - Montevideo

Montevideo is the capital as well as the most populous city in Uruguay with 1.320.000 inhabitants. It overlooks the sea and houses the main port, is a city quite beaten by tourism even if the country is not yet stormed like many other South American places. The city hosts strong and interesting contrasts that are immediately visible: old colonial buildings, particularly in the Ciudad Vieja that grew up around Plaza Indipendencia, and then super modern skyscrapers that represent the entrepreneurial spirit of the country. Among the activities not to be missed: a walk on the Rambla, the waterfront much beaten by the inhabitants of the city in their spare time, and a detour to the Mercado del Puerto to sample street food, including parrilla (grilled meat).
