- The Rose Island Lighthouse
Il Rhode Island it is the smallest state in the US, it is in fact nicknamed "Little Rhody“, But it is densely inhabited. Located on the southern coast of the Atlantic, it has the ocean to the south. To the north and east it borders Massachusetts, to the west with Connecticut.
Its surface is less than 4000 square km. The territory of Rhode Island is largely flat, especially in the coastal areas, and only becomes hilly inland. Many areas are covered with forests, rich in various tree species. The climate is of a humid continental type, with cold but not very rigid winters and summers in which the heat is mitigated by the Atlantic currents. Occasionally, hurricanes occur on the coasts.
The capital of Rhode Island is Providence and it is also the most populous and well-known city.
First explored by the Spanish navigator Giovanni da Verrazzano, Rhode Island was born as a union of several colonies. In 1776 it became independent and in 1790 it became part of the United States.
When Jefferson banned the importation of textiles from England in 1807, the state's textile industries experienced their period of maximum development. During the Civil War the State was not the scene of any clashes, but it was decisive in supplying the Northern army. Active in the naval sector in both world wars, Rhode Island was the only US state along with Connecticut to oppose prohibition laws in the 20s.
Rhode Island is full of stunning beaches and enchanting coves all along its coastline.
The capital Providence it has all the facilities of a metropolis, but at the same time retains the simple and peaceful atmosphere of the provincial town. A visit deserves the Capitol Center, an important urban area with condominiums, parks, banks and large shopping centers. For those who love greenery and history, a trip to the Roger Williams Park, where there are characteristic objects from the Victorian era.
Newport It is the favorite holiday destination of American high society, but it is also rich in art and history. A must see is the Fort Adams State Park, with the largest coastal fortification in the USA. Newport hosts many famous musical events around the world, and various editions of the America's Cup have been held there.
Many of Rhode Island's signature dishes are based on seafood, the chowder is a soup that mixes potatoes and seafood. Another typical dish of the state is the beef-jerky, a dish based on smoked and dried beef, with a very characteristic flavor.
The hottest drink in Rhode Island is the lemonade, in fact, the famous “Del's lemonade” factory was born here, which later established itself all over the world.
The Rose Island Lighthouse
The ancient lighthouse, built in the nineteenth century and then abandoned in the 70s, was restored in 1984. Now it is a tourist destination of great interest, where you can spend a night or stay for a week as a "lighthouse keeper" , taking care of its maintenance. Accessible only by boat from Newport, it is a destination suitable for a special honeymoon and definitely out of the ordinary.
