Phi Phi Islands are two very suggestive islands, Koh Phi Phi Don and Koh Phi Phi Leh, which became famous for being the set of the film The Beach in 1999 with Leonardo di Caprio.
Capable of attracting a large number of visitors every year, they are one of the most popular destinations in all of southern Thailand, where spectacular cliffs overlooking an emerald green sea, a colorful coral reef, white beaches formed by soft and fine sand, create together a picture to be admired.

When to go? Info on climate and best time

    • Weather: tropical, hot all year round, with a rainy season from May to October, due to the southwest monsoon, and a dry season from December to March. The temperatures are always high (24 min / 30 max). March, April and May are the hottest months of the year.
The rainy period has two peaks in which the rains are very abundant: May and between September-October. In some years, there can be torrential rains even in July and August.
The sea is warm every month (29-30 degrees), but in the summer it can be rough due to the monsoon.
    • Best time: the best time is from January to March, when it does not rain, the climate is dry and not too hot. In August the weather is variable, rainy with sun breaks or vice versa, so it can be considered.
    • Period to avoid: from June to November the Phi Phi are affected by the monsoon, between September and October the rains are usually more frequent. Sometimes tropical cyclones can occur between April and December, but it is still a fairly protected area. Typhoons can come from the east, especially between October and December.
    • Advice: in the rainy season the humidity is really high, so bring clothes with light and breathable fabrics, preferably natural fibers; long pants and long-sleeved shirts to protect you from mosquitoes; always bring a waterproof jacket or a small umbrella in any season.
In the dry season, pack a sweatshirt or a slightly heavier jacket for the evening. Avoid too heavy clothes that you will not use. Don't forget insect repellent, sunscreen, snorkel gear, and first aid medicines.
Avoid tank tops, low-cut or transparent shirts, shorts that are too short and tops in public places (they may not let you in). Always carry a pair of light long trousers with you, as some attractions are mandatory. For men, don't go bare-chested and don't drive any vehicle without a t-shirt: it's illegal! Always remember to get dressed after leaving the beach.

    Which island to go to?

The Phi Phi archipelago, as already mentioned, consists of two main islands, Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh, plus several smaller islands and islets.

    Ko Phi Phi Don

The island has two hills separated by a double symmetrical bay, Ao Ton Sai facing south and opposite Ao Loh Dalum bay to the north. The land between these two bays is full of resorts, guesthouses, restaurants, shops, cafes, as well as being the scene of beach parties and nightlife.
Despite this, the main bay of Koh Phi Phi Don remains a fascinating natural spectacle with its limestone cliff covered by a lush tropical forest, the thin strip of fine white sand surrounded by palm trees, the small and beautiful coves.
Among the beaches to see are Long Beach, where you can practice snorkeling, Laem Thong Beach, Bakao Beach.

The island is connected with that of Phuket and Krabi by ferries that depart daily, the journey takes about 1 hour and a half for € 10,00 each way. You can take a speedboat, but the prices are higher (over € 200,00).
The island is completely pedestrian, so you are free to walk everywhere thinking, at most, of renting a bicycle.
It can be said that the presence of hotels and various services have made the island a little chaotic, but just move to hidden coves and beaches to find a corner of peace.

    Ko Phi Phi Leh

The smaller of the two islands that make up Phi Phi Island, is a protected national marine park and it is one of the day trips that usually take place on Phi Phi Island.
Its beauty is extraordinary, full of bright tropical colors that blend with the brilliant blue of the beautiful sea.
Its most beautiful beaches are Maya Bay, Lagoon Beach, Bamboo Island.

Unlike Ko Phi Phi Don this island has no hotels, services and is not inhabited: it is practically in the wild and can be reached by ferries that dock at the small bays.
It can also be visited through organized tours, which depart from both Ko Phi Phi Don and Phuket, or other major islands.

7 things to see: beaches and places of interest

    1. Maya Bay: is located on the island of Ko Phi Phi Leh and became famous after the movie "The Beach". White sand, clear waters and rocks that emerge from the sea: it is a real paradise and one of the most beautiful beaches. However, it is very crowded and therefore better to go there early in the morning or at sunset.
    2. Lagoon Bay: it is practically a lagoon created by the sea, with huge sheer boulders that surround it, reflecting their intense green in the clear water. A framework!
    3. Monkey beach: the peculiarity of this beach is being invaded by many monkeys! They are truly everywhere, as this is their habitat. It is recommended not to pick them up or touch them, mothers can be very ferocious in order to defend their puppies.
    4. Phi Phi Don viewpoint: it is a panoramic point from which you can admire an incredible view and can be reached with a walk of about 30 minutes from Tonsai. You pay 30 bath (not even € 1,00) and I recommend continuing up to the second viewpoint.
    5. Bamboo beach: it is an almost uncontaminated island, with very white sand and crystal clear water. Being a protected area, the entrance costs 400 bath per person (€ 10,00-11,00).
    6. Laem Tong Bay: very large and quiet beach, far from the chaos and therefore less inflated than many others.
    7. Koh Bida Nok: this beach is rich in coral reefs and perfect for diving and snorkeling. Black tip sharks, soldier fish, parrot and butterfly fish, giant moray eels, turtles and lion fish are just some of the animals you can spot.

What to do in the Phi Phi Islands: excursions and tours

How much does a Phi Phi Islands vacation cost? Prices, offers and advice

As for the costs of airline tickets which, as we know, are always the ones that affect the most, consider spending between € 650,00 and € 750,00 for flights from Milan or Rome. There are round trip offers around € 450,00, but you must always monitor the sites and have the opportunity to travel all year round.

As for hotels, the quality / price ratio is excellent: starting from € 10,00 per person per night to reach € 70,00-80,00 for an average accommodation. It is clear that you can spend a lot more, if you choose higher category resorts in the high season.

Good food is not lacking and you will not spend on average more than € 6,00-7,00 per day if you don't, of course, have an A to Z dinner in a fancy restaurant.

I internal flights that take you from Bangkok to Phuket or Krabi, generally cost about € 50,00 and then you have to add about twenty euros by ferry to reach Phi Phi.
The attractions that are visited usually cost an average of € 3,00, while the famous Thai massages (to try absolutely!) Have an average price that varies between 400 and 600 baht (€ 10,00 / 12,00) for 2 hours.

Interesting flight + hotel packages for two cost just over € 3.000,00 in total for a week and, usually, a trip costs about € 1.000,00 - 1.500,00 per person. Obviously, internal flights and everything you need on a daily basis must be added to these.
