Papua New Guinea is a peninsula in Oceania located on Papua Island, a large island shared with Indonesia. Nonetheless, Papua New Guinea is a separate state with its own government and administration.

    How to reach us

    • From Milan or Rome: the main airport is Port Moresby, but there are no direct flights from Italy. At least two stopovers are required by changing different airlines, for a journey of almost 30 hours (single flights last about 5 hours each, but the stopovers are very long). Usually the first stop is in London, Frankfurt, Warsaw or Doha, while the second in Manila or Singapore. The airlines that offer connections between Milan or Rome and Port Moresby are British Airways, Quatar Airways, Philippine Airlines, Air Niugini and Singapore Airlines.
Flights from Rome from € 1.222,00 - Flights from Milan from € 1.296,00
    • From the main European capitals: to avoid at least one stopover, starting from a European city can help. Contrary to what you might think, there are several cities in Europe that are well connected to Papua New Guinea, for example from London you leave with British Airways and Philippine Airlines with a stopover in Manila only, from Frankfurt instead you fly with Singapore Airlines. stopping only in Singapore, while Air Niugini leaves from Warsaw always with a single stopover in Singapore

When to go? Info on climate and best time

    • Weather: the climate is equatorial or tropical according to the zones and in both cases it has very high temperatures. The rainy days are distributed frequently throughout the months and throughout the territory, but generally in the south it rains less. The sea temperature always remains warm between 27 and 29 ° C.
    • Best time: from June to September is the perfect time to visit the whole country during which it rains less and in some areas even rarely
    • Period to avoid: from November to May is the rainy season with a high risk of cyclones
    • Advice: if your trip does not only include beaches but also includes mountainous areas in the hinterland, then you will need some clothes for the mid-season, but without exaggerating, for example a light jacket. If, on the other hand, you want to go hiking on the highest peaks, in this case you will also need a warm jacket and a sweater

Which area / city to go to?

Papua New Guinea has a vast territory that also includes a myriad of islands, approximately 80. However, not all areas are ideal to stay in due to the scarcity of services and the difficulty of reaching them. So here are the three best areas / cities that we want to recommend:

    1. Port Moresby: it is the capital of Papua New Guinea, on the southern coast, the richest city in accommodation and catering facilities, transport and tourist services of various kinds such as rentals, currency exchange and excursion agencies
    2. New Britain: it is the largest island in the area, naturally beautiful and at the same time very popular with tourists, especially by do-it-yourself travelers, undoubtedly for the ease in reaching it thanks to the low cost air connections with the capital
    3. Madang: it is among the main cities of the country, the starting point for many excursions to small remote islands and complete with an airport. It also boasts beaches with lush vegetation and is a great spot for snorkeling among the coral reefs

What to do and what to see: beaches and places of interest

    1. Panasia Island is a small island in the Louisiade archipelago with all the characteristics of a perfect oasis of peace. Wide beach, white sand and turquoise waters, the ideal place for a day trip
    2. Blanche Bay is a bay located at the north-eastern end of New Britain island, a spacious beach overlooked by hotels and resorts offering a spectacular view of the sea but above all of the smoking volcanoes
    3. Buka Island it is a small island north of Bougainville, to which it is almost attached. This island, albeit small, is very popular to the point that it has a tourist office, which is rare in Papua New Guinea, and is loved above all for its clear waters and for the possibility of fishing or snorkeling.
    4. Bramble Haven it is a circular atoll that creates a splendid lagoon with the typical colors of tropical waters. A day trip can be useful to reach the island without difficulty and spend your time relaxing without worries
    5. Alotau Beach is a long stretch of coast that flanks the homonymous town overlooking the Bay of Milne, in the south of Papua New Guinea, a succession of dark sand due to the strong volcanic activity where various services for tourists are concentrated
    6. Kitava Island it is a small, typically tropical unspoiled island, the favorite place for snorkeling and diving but also for the canoe ride around it. It is one of the most requested excursions and in fact reaching it is not difficult as it is part of the destinations of many excursion agencies
    7. Mount Tavurvur it is one of the oldest volcanoes in Papua New Guinea which to date has given rise to other small volcanic cones, which have been active again since 2009. It is located in the easternmost area of the New Britain island, a few steps from the beach, and is a real natural attraction for tourists who can observe the smoking crater from the sea.
    8. Varirata National Park it is located near Port Moresby and is a large green area made up of trails and mountain rainforest that is home to several species of birds. Highly recommended place for bird watchers!
    9. Mount Wilhelm it is the highest peak in the whole of Papua New Guinea with its 4509 meters high, a few kilometers from Madang. A very demanding trek but highly sought after by mountain lovers
    10. Kokoda Trail is a bumpy 96km trail that crosses the Owen Stanley mountain range in the hinterland of the country. This trail was the subject of battles during the Second World War while today it is one of the most popular treks in Papua New Guinea. The route is very demanding and on foot takes about 16 hours during which you are in the middle of the forest, but obviously some excursion agencies offer alternatively trips to the best adventurous stretches

How much does a vacation in Papua New Guinea cost? Prices, offers and advice

Those who decide to take a trip to Papua New Guinea will have to take into account a very high budget! The most expensive part is certainly the return flights on € 1.000,00 to which then, in most cases, there is the cost of some other internal flight (fortunately cheaper) to move around the various areas, unless you want to spend the whole holiday in the same place.

If that's your intention, then we recommend that you purchase a flight + hotel package for more than 10 days given the time spent traveling and the large amount you will spend. For a two-week package costs around € 1.600,00 with bed and breakfast in a hotel or apartment, an advantageous solution if you consider that a room usually costs from € 45,00 per night without anything included. In any case, if you stay in the hotel you can enjoy full meals in small restaurants for around € 8,00 while if you stay in an apartment you will also have to take into account the shopping costs, in some cases the same as Italian prices, in other cases much higher.

Finally, let's take a look at the prices of the most requested services, for example public transport accessible with a few cents, car rental at a cost of € 35,00 per day and excursions with prices starting from € 150,00 for a whole day.

    • Hotel and b & b starting from € 48,00 per room -
    • starting from € 1.225,00 -
