Thanks to the rugged morphology with reliefs and valleys, many of the villages of Basilicata they are perched on the mountains to the point that, at times, they seem almost isolated.

Together with medieval fortresses, castles, splendid beaches and delicious Lucanian cuisine, these small villages set against the hills look like cribs and attract many tourists every year.

1 - Perticara Guard

"The village of stone houses", the village is so nicknamed because the Gorgoglione stone it gives life to the portals, the steps and the arches. A place to explore by walking through its cobbled paths and the stairs that lead up to the castle, which dominates the Sauro Valley. Many houses have coats of arms, bas-reliefs, rose windows and other details to admire ... You have to get lost in this small village!

2 - Venous

It is the village that in 65 BC gave birth to Orazio, the famous Roman poet. Here you will see several priceless treasures such as the imposing Pirro del Balzo Castle, which stands in the center of the village and houses the National archeologic museum, Archaeological Park where you can see the Roman baths, the remains of private domus and the amphitheater. Again, the Christian catacombs, theabbey of the Holy Trinity inside which there are precious frescoes and several buildings, such as the elegant one Calvino Palace and the grandiose Rapolla Palace.

Nearby you can visit Sink and its old medieval quarter, the Paleolithic site of Notarchirico, one of the oldest in Europe, Melfi and Monticchio lakes. Do not forget to taste the famous Aglianico del Vulture, one of the greatest red wines in Italy that is produced here.

3 - Castelmezzano

E' set in walls of spiers and peaks, it almost seems that the rock blends with the houses and alleys that populate it. Walks in the very suggestive historical center, for the steep stairways that occasionally lead to panoramic points from which to see the so-called "Lucanian Dolomites".
The places of interest are there Mother Church of Santa Maria, the rock church of the Madonna of the Ascension excavated among the rocks and numerous noble palaces such as that of Merlino, Parrella, Campagna, the vast ducal palace of the De Lerma and, finally, the remains of a Swabian-Norman fortress.

The activities you can do are many, especially trekking, mountain biking, fishing, horse riding and mushroom picking in autumn. Castelmezzano is immersed in the Regional Park of Gallipoli Cognato and the Lucanian Dolomites which allows you to do climbing and hiking with equipped routes.

4 - Matera

It's a city carved in tuff among the oldest in the world: here history, culture and nature come together to create a place with breathtaking scenery. Matera is the city ​​of stones, rock churches and natural areas, museums and concerts.
Obviously not to be missed is the ancient part with the famous stones, a unique architectural complex in which the caves used as houses, the winding alleys, the gardens and underground passages intertwine creating a wonderful landscape.

La Matera cathedral, which offers a scenic view of the city, the rock churches, the Diver which is the large cistern dug under Piazza Vittorio, il Musma (Museum of Contemporary Sculpture of Matera) entirely dedicated to sculpture. 5 - Maratea

Caves, silent beaches, transparent waters and lush mountains: Maratea is one of the most beautiful tourist destinations in Basilicata, perfect for lovers of the sea, diving and snorkeling. Walk through its streets that flow into romantic squares, observe the numerous churches, the hermitages and monasteries, the white houses and the enormous statue of Christ the Redeemer overlooking from the top of the mount of San Biagio, from which you can enjoy the coast of Maratea.

To relax on the beaches and take a swim, I recommend the Nera beach, of Macarro, A'Gnola and Castrocucco; for scuba diving and snorkeling enthusiasts are not to be missed caves of Maratea rich in flora and fauna, the cave of wonders, the island of Dino (a few kilometers from the city) which houses the Blue Grotto and that of the Lion.

6 - Acerenza

It is a shining one medieval village located on a tuff cliff over 800 meters above sea level, between the Bradano river and the Fiumarella stream.
Don't miss the majestic cathedral of the th century, even if it is impossible not to see it as it stands out over the whole panorama. After you can walk through the narrow streets of the historic center, the eighteenth-century buildings adorned with sculptures or coats of arms of ancient families, the church of San Vincenzo.

There are also three interesting museums: that of the wood carved in the convent of Sant'Antonio, the Diocesan of Sacred Art which houses wood and marble sculptures, manuscripts, paintings, silverware of the eighteenth century and the museum of rural civilization.
Acerenza is in Vulture National Park which offers nature to discover with nature trails, while on the Bradano river you can practice sport fishing and canoeing.

7 - Viggianello

It's a village with a Byzantine and Norman imprint, in which the Byzantine monks disseminated the laure (groups of monastic cells with a common church) visible at the foot of the historic center. Noteworthy are the chapel of San Sebastiano, of Byzantine origin, as well as the mother church dedicated to Santa Caterina d'Alessandria rich in works of art. Must see in convent of Sant'Antonio the sculpture of the Madonna with Child in white marble of Pietro Bernini, the father of Gian Lorenzo.
In the historic center you will find a vast architectural complex made up of buildings such as the eighteenth-century Palazzo Caporale, Palazzo De Filpo and the baroque Palazzo Marino with its numerous halls.

Among the activities, you can do in the Pollino Park, where Viggianello rises, trekking, horse riding, canoeing, rafting, climbing and fishing. Places to explore in the park are the source of the Mercure River, the Deer Wildlife Reserve and the Botanical Garden.

8 - Pisticci

It is a town on the Ionian coast, famous for its golden beaches and shallow waters. An unmissable destination for lovers of the sea, but not only.
In its historic center, in the part of "Pisticci vecchia", there are numerous attractions to visit, such as the Romanesque-Renaissance church of Saints Peter and Paul which, inside, houses altars and precious paintings, the ancient door of the town and Piazza Umberto I, dotted with important historic buildings. In the hamlet of Marconia there is the majestic castle of San Basilio, with a characteristic central tower.

It is located in the hilly area on the Basento bank, a few steps from Pisticci San Teodoro, where there is the site of the Incoronata. At the site, there are the ruins of a th century BC village where several artifacts were found, now exhibited in the National Archaeological Museum of Metaponto.

9 - Pietrapertosa

At the end of steep hairpin bends, the village is located within the Gallipoli Cognato Park and the Lucanian Dolomites with its landscape made up of sharp spiers, inclined rocks and boulders. You can admire old stately homes and the Arab quarter: a set of houses located between rocky walls, where the Arabs brought here by Prince Bomar settled. There isn't much left, but the Arabata retains the stern atmosphere of yesteryear.

Do not miss the many chapels, the highly decorated portals, the Franciscan convent and the mother church of San Giacomo Maggiore, in which there are two 1606 canvases by Antonio Ferro and other important frescoes. Again, the castle of the Norman-Swabian era, which has now remained a ruin, but which allows you to enjoy a wonderful scenery from its top.
Unique case in Italy, in Pietrapertosa it is possible to experience the emotion of Flight of the angel, on the steel cable suspended at a height of 400 meters between the rocks of Castelmezzano and Pietrapertosa.

In the surrounding areas there is the Wood of Montepiano, a very quiet green oasis and, in addition, there are fascinating nature trails that wind between Pietrapertosa and Castelmezzano.

10 - Irsina

It is among the most beautiful towns and villages in Basilicata. The points of interest are the cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta which preserves the crypt, the bell tower of the ancient church and a precious sculpture of Sant'Eufemia di Andrea Mantegna. Worthy of note are the frescoes of the Giotto school that are found in what was once the Norman castle of Irsinia, now the crypt of San Francesco.

Then take a walk through the streets of the village, you will discover the so-called House of shells, entirely decorated with pebbles and sea shells. To visit the Janora museum, which exhibits more than 300 exhibits that tell the art and life in this land.

Not far from the city, however, there is the great wood of Verrutoli where you get lost contemplating the luxuriant nature and the Monteserico Castle, from which a magnificent view can be observed.

11 - Rotondella

For its strategic panoramic position the village is called the "Balcony of the Ionian".
Its name, Rotunda Marinis, derives from its rounded shape, facing the sea.

From the top of the hill on which the village is developed, in addition to admiring one of the most exciting views of the surrounding area between the horizon of the sea, it is possible to find some refreshment on the hottest days. All around, blonde hills and, in the distance, the imposing peaks of Pollino, magical in winter due to the presence of snow.

The historic center has a very particular structure, spiral, and is surrounded by ancient houses embellished with eighteenth-century iron balconies, decorated portals and masks in worked stone scattered along the streets of the village.
Very particular are the singular "Lamie" of Bitonte, seventeenth-century stone arches vaulted right under the floor of the building owned by the Bitonte family.

12 - Tursi

Village of ancient Arab-Saracen origin that still has the architectures, testimony of the Arab domination.
The village is a medieval center of the th century, which originally developed around the castle and subsequently expanded into the valley below. The architectures of Arab heritage are concentrated in the ancient village of Rabatana.

Tursi is also known as the "city of Pierro", a poet who has been nominated for several times Nobel Prize for literature. Of Rabatana, Pierro made it source of inspiration for his poetry. In memory of the artist, the Literary Park dedicated to him.
To see the Gothic castle, historic buildings, the remains of ancient houses often with a single room on the ground floor, the cathedral and the splendid Sanctuary of Anglona.

Mainly based on an agricultural economy, in Tursi are widespread cultivation of citrus and fruit trees. Very famous are the Tursi oranges, so-called "stacce".

13 - Melfi

Immersed in the particular scenery of the black earth of the Vulture, Melfi is a place capable of giving truly unique emotions.

The town is divided into two parts: the more modern in the lower part and the old village placed on a hill, protected by the walls and the Norman castle. Melfi is "the Frederick city": Frederick II of Swabia chose it as his summer residence.
The castle, imposing and majestic like few others, dominates the valley. In fact, it overlooks a truly spectacular scenery, characterized by valleys and semi-desert hills, dotted only with sparse green shrubs.

The interior of the village is a tangle of narrow alleys that slope down towards the valley and, here and there, in the most unexpected corners, here small statues depicting children intent on playing the games of the past.
There is an atmosphere that invites you to walk aimlessly, letting yourself be surprised by enchanting views.
Often, on the façade of simple and modest houses, they are affixed small plaques that recall their historical past. This is the case of the one that indicates the residence of Pier delle Vigne and the one located in the place where the statesman Francesco Saverio Nitti was born and lived.

14 - Avigliano

In a scenario of landscapes and views, this is a very lively town in the province of Potenza, from architectures from different eras, a dialect with an unmistakable sound and unique flavors such as that of the typical cod.

Birthplace of the jurist and politician Emanuele Gianturco, to whom the main square is dedicated, Avigliano has numerous hamlets, among these the most famous is Lagopesole Castle where the castle of the Federician period stands, a place chosen by Frederick II of Swabia as a summer residence.
The charming manor house, with an ashlar masonry tower, a cistern and a chapel in Romanesque style, was refuge of brigands. Today it houses the Narrant Museum and various initiatives especially in summer.

The best way to discover the town is to stroll through the ancient and suggestive districts: Il Poggio, Il Serritiello, La Lavanga and Behind the Rocche, where it is easy to discover the true identity of the place.
To visit the Pontifical Basilica of Santa Maria del Carmine, various churches, a couple of monasteries and palaces dating from the fourteenth and seventeenth centuries, all elegantly decorated with stone portals enriched with geometric and floral motifs.

On Good Friday there is "The Passion of Christ", 14 and 15 June celebrating the patron saint San Vito, 15 and 16 July the Madonna del Carmine, at the end of August the Sagra del Baccalà and, in Castel Lagopesole, the Palio dei 3 Feudi ; the first week of October takes place the Lagopesole Regional Fair, the only trade fair that takes place in the province of Potenza

15 - Policoro

Sea, history and nature. These are the elements that distinguish Policoro, making it the ideal destination for a relaxing holiday.

Among the most important monuments is the Policoro Castle, a fortified farmhouse dating back to the year ; around Piazza Segni there is theGreek amphitheater, while in Piazza Eraclea there are arches and the bronze monument of Hercules, symbol of the city.

A short distance away are the ruins of the ancient Heracles, an important polis of the Magna Grecia. The testimonies of this glorious past are kept at Archaeological Museum of Sirtide.

The beach of Policoro, unlike the other Lucanian beaches overlooking the Ionian, is made of sand and small pebbles and the waters are crystal clear and clean. In 2016 it earned the prestigious award Blue Flag.
An unspoiled landscape to such an extent that it is possible to spot groups of Dolphins offshore and the loggerhead turtles have chosen these shores to lay their eggs!

16 - Metaponto

In the heart of Magna Grecia rises one of the most popular destinations in Basilicata, where nature and archeology are the undisputed protagonists.

Here the landscape consists of large areas of Mediterranean scrub and suggestive pine forests trespassing until golden beaches bathed by the crystalline waters of the Ionian Sea.

Metaponto was one of the most important cities of Magna Graecia.
Nell 'archeology area and in the museum there are traces of a glorious past made up of heroes and divinities, warriors and philosophers, like the mathematician Pythagoras, who founded his school and died in Metaponto. Symbol of the ancient Greek city are the imposing and fascinating Palatine Tables, twelve Doric columns, remains of the Temple of Hera.

17 - Montescaglioso

Site in the archaeological-historical and natural area of Park of the Rupestrian Churches of MateranoFrom 1993 is World Heritage Site together with the Sassi of Matera.

It is an important historical-cultural center known as the City of Monasteries for the presence of four monastic complexes, among which theAbbey of San Michele Arcangelo. Definitely worth a visit there too Mother Church, Norman Castle and Sanctuary of the Madonna della Murgia, the most important church of the rock heritage of Montescaglioso.

Montescaglioso is also famous for good food.
Known as one of the "cities of oil", the table never misses the extra virgin olive oil from Basilicata DOP, extracted mostly from the pressing ofMaiatica olive from Ferrandina, used in most of the typical dishes and for the production of in oil such as tomatoes, artichokes and aubergines.

18 - Rapolla

Note for the production of wine, olive oil and spa tourism, due to the presence of sources of acidic-ferruginous waters that flow from the three springs in the Orto del Lago district, as well as historic bishopric, Rapolla boasts a very high number of sacred and rural buildings.

The choice is really wide between: two monasteries, three convents, three crosses, ten graduations, five hermitages, seven churches, and, if we consider the past as a bishop's curia, even the abbey of Santa Maria di Pierno and the abbey of Monticchio.

A peculiar characteristic of the Rapolla area are the hypogeal cavities which are found on every side of a tufaceous ridge.

Exactly in front of the historical center, is the particular site of the Urban Park of the Cellars. Consisting of underground cavities with a single external closing wall, these cavities have been used since ancient times for the conservation of wines produced on the hills exposed to the sun (a mangós in the local dialect).

19 - Craco

For its particular beauty, Craco is included in the list of the World Monuments Funds.

To see it from the outside, the splendid "ghost town" of Basilicata refers to the typical settings from Western film. Not by chance nationally and internationally renowned directors they chose it as the setting for their films. Among many, we mention "The Passion" (2004) by Mel Gibson.

Destroyed in 1963 by a landslide, which forced the local population to leave the village and take refuge in the new municipality of Craco Peschiera, the old town remains stone houses clinging to the rock, among which the Norman tower stands out.

To visit Craco you need to follow a guided tour route, along a route made safe and equipped with a helmet (some architectures continue to yield). Walk along the main street of the town until you reach what remains of the old square and enter the central core.

Noteworthy are the mother church, Palazzo Grossi with its frescoes with floral motifs, Palazzo Carbone with a monumental entrance and Palazzo Maronna, nicknamed "castle" by the locals.

And all around, boundless prairies and the famous badlands.

20 - Sink

One of the municipalities of the splendid Vulture area where various places of historical and artistic interest are concentrated which testify to its ancient origins.
The history of Lavello is linked to the era of the Norman denomination, which dates back to castle, today the seat of the municipality, but what makes the town particularly pretty is its characteristic medieval village called "Pescarello".

Only two doors remain of the ancient walls, Porta del Forno and Porta Nuova, while four ancient monumental fountains with original architecture surround the town.

To visit the Church of St. Anne which houses precious sacred paintings, the Cathedral of San Mauro near the castle and the medieval Church of Santa Maria del Principio from the frescoes of inestimable value and beauty.
Also noteworthy is the Sanctuary of the Gavetta, on the edge of a plateau overlooking the Ofanto Valley, where the first nucleus of the Roman Forentum archaeological park is visible, the remains of a Dauno-Roman sanctuary dedicated to a divinity of the waters.
Very interesting is the Museum of peasant civilization set up in the atrium of the Doge's Palace.
