Wild and authentic, the island of Lefkada lies between Corfu and Kefalonia. Sung by Homer's poetic lines, it is a paradise island, which combines land and sea in bright colors and postcard landscapes. Characterized by a white cliff overlooking the sea (it is said that the famous Greek poet Sappho died on this cliff), the island is full of enchanting beaches and crystal clear waters, which attract tourists from all over the world.

Not one of the most famous Greek islands, but certainly one of the most authentic. So here it is a small guide and useful information to better visit Lefkada!

    Where it is

    The island of Lefkada it is located on the west coast of Greece, rises between the islands of Corfu and Kefalonia and is bathed by the Ionian Sea. The island is connected to the Greek mainland by a bridge about 50 meters long.



    How to reach us

    The island of Lefkada is served by Aktion-Preveza Airport, known more simply as Lefkada Airport, which is located about 12 km from the town of Lefakada.

    • From the main European capitals: during the summer several direct flights are activated, while in the rest of the year the only direct flight leaves from London, operated by British Airways or Easyjet (3 h)

    When to go? Info on climate and best time

    • Weather: Mediterranean, with mild winters and hot, sunny summers. Precipitation is concentrated mainly in the period between October and February. The sea temperature is optimal between July and September (on average 24 °)
    • Best time: from June to mid-September for a holiday marked by the sun and the sea. To save money, prefer the months of May, June, September
    • Period to avoid: since it is a mainly seaside destination, from November to April there are no suitable conditions. From December to mid-March possible waves of bad weather with abundant rain and possible night frosts

    1. Aghios Ioannis: a beautiful beach, very famous for the Ghira mills, where in the 900s wheat from Russia was ground. The ruins of four of the twelve ancient mills are still visible today
    2. Pefkoulia: wild and surrounded by aromatic pine trees, this is another of the island's enchanting beaches. Its turquoise waters have always enchanted tourists from all over the world
    3. Egremni: one of the most beautiful beaches in the whole of Greece. It can be reached via a staircase named "Stairway to Heaven" because of the spectacle that presents itself to the eyes from the top: a thousand shades of blue and turquoise
    4. Porto Katsiki: defined as the most beautiful beach in Europe, here is another of the wonders of Lefkada. It also offers a staircase directly on the enchantment of the sea
    5. Gorge of Dimosari: a real spectacle of nature, located next to the village of Rachi. A pool of water surrounded by greenery and a path that leads directly to the wonderful and mighty waterfalls
    6. Nydri village: the cosmopolitan center of the city, between enchanting beaches, clubs and many tourist attractions. A small cross-section of Lefkada in a village of only eight hundred inhabitants
    7. Faneromeni Monastery: one of the most important monuments of the place, with an ancient history and an ecclesiastical museum. It is currently the only Lefkada monastery still in operation
    8. Eglouvi plateau: an enchanting setting, where the ancient and traditional cultivation of local lentils is still practiced. A piece of history, tradition and folklore
    9. Nirikos: the ancient capital of Lefkada, which was abandoned around 1300 and of which the ruins of a castle remain today
    10. Vasiliki: an ancient fishing village, today a famous destination for all lovers of windsurfing and kite surfing. Full of small shops and traditional taverns where it will be a must to taste the fresh catch of the day

    Unlike other very famous Greek islands, such as Corfu, Crete or Santorini, Lefkada is a quieter area even in summer and with lower prices!

    The cost of living is not expensive, the food is at a good price and it will always be tempting to opt for the typical Greek street food, which in addition to being extremely greedy is also exceptionally cheap. Hotel rates they are around € 60,00 per night during the high season of the summer, dropping to an average of € 40,00 in the low season. The cost of an umbrella and sun bed on the beach is around € 7,00 for the whole day, parking around € 4,00. It can turn out the rental car is very useful to move freely around the island, to be rented at the airport, alternatively also the scooter!
