Traveling to California or taking a ride on the West Coast is not only an opportunity to admire some of the most amazing natural wonders of the USA, but also the opportunity to visit some sensational theme parks that, in the area between Los Angeles and the Orange County, battle it out with amazing rides and truly impressive environmental reconstructions.

If recently the Disneyland park scored a good point in the entertainment world by inaugurating the Star Wars themed area in California, well before (in 2010) the bitter competitor Universal Studios had inaugurated The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in his Universal Orlando park in Florida, then replicating it (about 6 years later) in his other park in Hollywood.

We have already explored in detail the offer of the area dedicated to Harry Potter in Orlando, today I thought of dedicating a small guide also to its equivalent in Hollywood, in order to clarify some recurring questions that we often receive on the subject, for example: what are the differences between the park of Harry Potter in Orlando and the one in Los Angeles? Does the Universal Studios Hollywood ticket also include the thematic area dedicated to the famous wizard of Hogwarts? How long does it take to visit it? What rides, attractions and reconstructions of the environment await us? Let's try to learn more about the topic.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Hollywood: where it is and what it is

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Los Angeles is an area entirely dedicated to the famous wizard immortalized in the books by JK Rowling but it is not a park in its own right, it is an integral part of the Universal Studios Hollywood, an amusement park entirely dedicated to the world of cinema located in the San Fernando Valley area, in the greater metropolitan area of Los Angeles.

To access, you just need to pay the entrance ticket to the park which also includes all the attractions and rides. For more information on tickets, read our special section. While, for all the information on how to get there by car or public transport and for other details on how to plan your visit, you can refer to our complete guide to Universal Studios Hollywood.

    Differences with Orlando's Wizarding World

Although the 2 thematic areas are called the same (The Wizarding World of Harry Potter) in reality there are substantial differences. First of all, that of Orlando consists of 2 thematic areas (Hogsmeade e Diagon Alley), in turn inserted in 2 neighboring but distinct parks (Universal Studios and Universal Island of Adventure), while that of Los Angeles consists of only 1 area, almost equivalent to Hogsmeade which is located in Florida. Consequently you can understand how the Hollywood version is necessarily smaller and less rich than that of Orlando.

    What awaits you

The location where you will find yourself is Hogsmeade, the snowy village where Harry and his companions go to drink butter beer (and of course you can too). Here you will find various shops and restaurants featured in the saga, including Ollivanders, from which you can buy your magic wand.

Walking through the streets of the town you will see the profile of the majestic Hogwarts Castle, which houses the most popular carousel in the park, Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, a heart-pounding 3D Ride where you will follow Harry in his amazing flights on the broomstick. In front of the castle there is also another carousel, Flight of the Hippogriff, a kind of roller coaster for everyone inspired by the famous bird of the saga.

Missing rides and differences in shows

The most noticeable difference from the Florida version of the park is the lack of a carousel Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure and Hogwarts Express, which in the Orlando park allows you to move easily between Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley.

Compared to Orlando's Hogsmeade there is no longer the night light show at the castle (Nighttime Lights at Hogwarts Castle), but in its place is the Dark Arts at Hogwarts Castle, a show of music, lights and special effects that will materialize before your eyes the darkest creatures of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, including the ultimate villain, Lord Voldemort. Currently this experience is exclusive to the Hollywood park.

    Ticket price

A final important difference concerns the cost of the ticket: if you want to visit both thematic areas in Orlando you will have to buy the entrance ticket for 2 parks (as we have already explained to you in our guide on the Harry Potter park in Florida) and consequently you will have to pay a higher price, instead, in the in the case of the Hollywood thematic area, it will be sufficient to purchase a single ticket for Universal Studios in Los Angeles.

How long does it take to visit?

Half a day is more than enough to visit the themed area dedicated to Harry Potter, while in a full day you can enjoy the entire park, although, depending on the period of visit, the option could be quite convenient. Express, which allows you to skip the lines at individual attractions. In this regard, read these tips on timetables and the best period for the visit.

Is Harry Potter Park in Hollywood worth visiting?

Certainly i hardcore Harry Potter fans they will have a feeling of incompleteness in visiting the beautiful reconstruction of Hogsmeade, knowing however that they will not be able to enjoy the equally evocative Diagon Alley, with the carousel dedicated to the descent between the underground tunnels of the Gringotts bank, the famous Nottetempo and the shady atmosphere of Nocturne Alley.

However, it must also be said that the thematic area that you will find in Hollywood is truly remarkable: the village of Hogsmeade is reconstructed in the smallest detail, the possibility of walk inside Hogwarts Castle surrounded by paintings and talking hats it is an emotion not to be underestimated, and right here the best carousel awaits you (or at least the one that registers the greatest turnout even in Orlando): Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey.

In short, if you are a fan of Rowling's wizard and pass by Los Angeles I doubt you will be disappointed, you can also count on all the other attractions included in the Universal Studios park, including the tour of movie sets, an experience that for me alone is worth the price of the ticket, and that remains the exclusive prerogative of those who visit the Hollywood park.
