The Formentera Libre agency: hotels, villas and apartments for all tastes
Pablo Canegallo, originally from Tortona (in the province of Alessandria) visits the Balearic Islands for the first time back in 1995, but only five years later an unconditional love breaks out - as he tells us - for Ibiza and Formentera. After several working seasons on the islands, he opened in 2010 the Formentera Libre agency, an assisted, practical and secure booking company that today boasts over 2.000 online bookings.
What types of accommodation does Formentera Libre offer?
Formentera Libre, an agency whose headquarters is located in the port of Ibiza, offers its customers a range of accommodation suitable for any type of need:
- Apartments: studios or with 1, 2 or 3 bedrooms for different price ranges and in all areas of the island. Most of the apartments have a kitchenette and balcony, or outdoor area.
- Hostal: the concept is similar to that of our 'pension'. These are simple hotel rooms, at competitive prices and characterized by a 'family' treatment.
- Hotels: generally of a higher level (and price) than hostals, recommended for those who require higher standards of comfort.
- Independent houses: suitable for larger groups or families. Our independent houses are usually obtained from typical houses of the island, in style, renovated and equipped with all comforts.
The type of accommodation on which to orient yourself can depend on many factors: personal conditions and needs, number of people, budget and level of comfort required. One of the points of Free Formentera it is precisely the personalized advice that makes the difference when choosing your holiday.
Do you also offer other types of customer services?
The fact of residing on the islands has allowed us to forge privileged relationships with local suppliers and therefore to obtain discounted rates on the numerous additional services offered to our customers: private transfers, car and motorcycle rental, ferry tickets, excursions. We were also the first to offer all our customers a comfortable free transfer with our own vehicle, from the airport to the port of Ibiza. In 2014 we have devised one GoldCard Free, which entitles you to discounts and promotions in affiliated restaurants, clubs and shops.
How important is the area to choose your accommodation? Are there any areas that are more interesting than others?
The choice of the area where to stay in Formentera is important, but not decisive, as the size and geography of the island mean that there are no areas far from the sea, which can always be reached by traveling a few kilometers. The most area requesta from our customers is the village of Es Pujols; located in the North East of Formentera, near the most beautiful beaches and a few kilometers from the port of La Savina, Es Pujols is an ancient fishing village and even now, despite the more or less recent tourist boom, it has just over 600 resident inhabitants . Although the highest concentration of apartments and hotels is found here, Es Pujols still retains the dimension of a small village, which can be covered on foot in all its extension.
Mitjorn beach runs along much of the south coast of Formentera, for more than 6 km. Thanks to its extension, Mitjorn remains one of the quietest beaches on the island and keeps its wild aspect unchanged, even if there is no lack of facilities and services.
If you love the beauty of the seabed and the colors of the sea, we recommend a small detour (only 2 km) from Mitjorn towards the beautiful beach of It's Calo, famous for the shades of navy blue and for the reflections of light given by particular minerals present in the rocks.
The Salinas River, a natural park and UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001, includes two strips of land, south of Ibiza and north of Formentera, together with the islets and of course the marine expanse that separates the two islands. The beaches and crystalline waters of Las Salinas hide a wonderful and fragile ecosystem, declared for this 'special protection'.
Even the country the Savina, where the tourist port of Formentera is located, can be an excellent choice, for its excellent location (near Illetas and Es Pujols) and for the numerous services that the town offers.
In your opinion, how long in advance should you book accommodation and organize your vacation on the island?
As with airlines, the rule "who book first, stay better" applies to booking accommodation; therefore it is never too early to book your holidays in Formentera, but it is in January and February that you usually have the opportunity to take advantage of the best offers and save up to 10-15% compared to the official rates.
What are the tips you would like to give to someone who has never visited the island? (the three things you absolutely must do)
First of all I recommend a classic itinerary, feasible both by bike and by scooter, is the one that connects the two large lighthouses of the island, Es Cap De Barbaria and La Mola, which are located at both ends of the island. In this way you can walk it in all its length. Obviously the beaches of Illetas and Llevante are essential stops during a stay in Formentera.
And what is the best time to visit Formentera?
Formentera is the least rainy island of the Balearics. Sunny days are on average 300 per year and rainfall is concentrated in spring and especially autumn. If you are not afraid of slightly cooler waters, we recommend the low season months before and after the summer: May-June and then September-October. In this period the island is an enchantment of colors, scents and tranquility. If the priorities of your holiday in Formentera are sunbathing and having fun in the most fashionable places, the central months of summer, July and August, are obviously recommended.
