Discovering the lighthouses of Formentera

On holiday in Formentera to discover the magic of its lighthouses

With an area of just over 83km2, and a single municipality, the smallest of the Balearic islands it is also the most fascinating. Perhaps precisely because the dimensions of this gem make it unique, Formentera is also one of the favorite holiday destinations for European and non-European tourists. Geographically it looks like a splendid, long tongue of white sand, almost blinding, surrounded by a postcard sea and dotted with green points of Mediterranean vegetation.

Accessible only by sea, Formentera offers a corner of paradise in the middle of the Mediterranean, but also gods truly breathtaking views. Proof of this are the a lot to do owned by the island: two on the territory of Formentera and one on the'Island of the Hogs, islet belonging to Formentera. The three lighthouses are all located, as we have mentioned, in unique points, different from each other, but of breathtaking beauty.

The southernmost of the three is the lighthouse of Babaria, surrounded by an impressive rocky landscape. Designed by Rafael Soler in 1967 and inaugurated in 1972. Babaria is the southernmost lighthouse of the entire Balearic archipelago. The emblematic lighthouse de La Mola stands out in the night with its 12 powerful beams of light. Inaugurated in 1861 to a design by Emil Pou, since 1970 it has had a 12-sided lamp, unique in the archipelago. Then there is the lighthouse D'En Pou, on the islet of Los Puercos. Also designed by Emil Pou, it is used to help sailors in the difficult stretch of sea between Ibiza and Formentera. It was inaugurated in 1864; it was the second lighthouse in the archipelago, after that of Penjats, to switch to automated and solar lighting, in 1935.

The lighthouses of Formentera emanate charm and mystery: perhaps for the location on the island, or perhaps for the magic of this place that seems abandoned like a pearl in the sea. They are considered one of the main features of the island and many are the tourists who choose the island of Formentera every year for your holidays: on a small strip of land, in fact, they find sea, sun and a pinch of mystery.

For your next holidays think of the alternative of going to discover the Balerai lighthouses, and if you choose Formentera as a starting point for this new summer adventure, we advise you to stay at the Los Olivos Apartments in Es Caló, the Es Pujols apartments (in the locality of the same name) or the Sa Revista Apartments, in the exclusive area of La Savina, a stone's throw from the splendid and well-known beach of Illetes

If you prefer instead a truly exclusive holiday, to which you can combine the unique view of the lighthouses from the sea, you can opt for a holiday in the name of nature, and rent a sailing ship that will give you unique views of the splendid island of Formentera.
