The summit of Doi Inthanon

The Doi Inthanon is the highest peak in the whole country, with a height of 2.565 meters. Initially the mountain bore the name of "Doi Luang" (The Great Mountain), which was later changed to the current one in honor of the last ruler of Chiang Mai, King Inthanon. It was this king of Chiang Mai who began to understand the importance of forest preservation, its ecosystem and the unique features that characterize the natural environment. When the ruler died, his ashes were placed in the small shrine located near the famous wooden plaque with the inscription "The Highest Spot in Thailand" (The highest peak in Thailand).
