Antelope Canyon – Horseshoe Bend in breve

Antelope Canyon, known for its narrow rock walls, smoothed and shaped by atmospheric agents, and for the play of light caused by the rays of the sun that filters through it, it is the most famous and visited slot canyon in all of Western America. It is divided into 2 areas: Upper Antelope Canyon e Lower Antelope Canyon and, contrary to what happens for most of the other natural parks, the visit is subject to the purchase of a organized tour: in other words, it is not possible to visit it freely.

Horseshoe Bend it is a brilliant "invention" of Colorado. It is a loop that has taken the shape of a horseshoe, around which the placid waters of the river flow, as if painted by the brush of an inspired painter. As we have already said in our previous study, visiting Horseshoe Bend is completely free but you have to pay for the parking: after a short and agile walk (which, however, should not be underestimated in the heat), you will reach a spectacular observation point.

Antelope Canyon e Horseshoe BendAlthough they are part of the same Indian reservation, they are not part of the same natural area, and therefore, if you purchase an Antelope tour at the various Navajo Indian agencies located in Page, you will not be able to visit Horseshoe Bend.

    How to visit them independently

So, how can you visit both attractions in a short time? If we are in the area of Page for just one day - and maybe we want to take a look at nearby Lake Powell too - do we run the risk of missing something? The answer is no, if you follow some little advice.

First of all, book in advance the Antelope tour! Many tourists arrive in Page without knowing that this is the only way to visit it, and therefore attempt a race against time, moving from agency to agency in the hope of making it onto a waiting list. If you book your tour in advance, you can better organize your day by including Horseshoe Bend in the itinerary.

    • As already mentioned, you cannot freely visit Antelope - most Upper Antelope Canyon tours start from center of Page, those for Lower Antelope Canyon start instead close to the slot canyon itself. In any case you will leave the car near the agency and, after the tour (which lasts about 1.40 in the first case, and 1 hour in the second), you can pick it up and leave again.
    • What about Horseshoe Bend? It takes a long time? How far is it? From the center of Page, you will have to travel just 7 km on the Highway 89, for a total of about 10 minutes by car. After that, a 20-minute walk awaits you before you can enjoy the show. As busy as it is, there are no reservations to wait or queues to deal with - just choose the best time to visit. From 2019, you have to pay for parking.

Ultimately, you will have understood that the Antelope Canyon-Horseshoe Bend combination is not at all impossible in terms of time, quite the opposite! With a little organization, you would even be able to visit both of them in the space of a morning, dedicating the afternoon to visiting other natural scenarios, such as Marble Canyon, the aforementioned Lake Powell or, why not, a tour of Glen Canyon.

    Where to sleep?

I recommend that you look for your hotel in Page or choose the beautiful one Lake Powell Resort. In fact, an accommodation in the area will allow you to explore all the beauties of the surroundings of Page calmly and without risking missing anything. If you come from other parks in the area such as Grand Canyon, Monument Valley or Bryce and you are unable to enter the overnight stay in Page, I refer you to our dedicated guides:
