Regarding the origin of these formations, one is in progress real dispute. Geologists, in fact, having observed the conspicuous presence of outcrops of limited size, which testify to a more rapid rock cooling, have hypothesized that the origin occurred under a clayey layer of more modest thickness or in the innermost interstices of the cushion lavas.
