It is one of the pearls of Tuscany, a town that has remained, in the architecture of its buildings, in the streets and in the general atmosphere, linked - or almost - to the medieval era.

1 - Piazza del Campo

All the medieval Sienese allure given off in a square with the characteristic shape of a shell with nine segments (in honor of the homonymous, historian, Government of the Nine). Piazza del Campo, the hub of the economic and social life of the city since the fourteenth century, is seat of the famous Palio, held in the Tuscan town twice a year. Admirable from above (climbing to the top of the Torre del Mangia, located in the imposing Palazzo Pubblico that overlooks the square), the square boasts a natural slope that feeds its charm and houses a copy of the Fonte Gaia (the original, made by Jacopo della Quercia, was sculpted between 1409 and 1419).

2 - Palazzo Pubblico

Three attractions in one: this is how we could sum up the visit to the elegant Palazzo Pubblico of Siena, one of the most majestic buildings for civil use in our nation. Inside this structure houses the civic Museum, with works of rare beauty such as frescoes by Lorenzetti; next to the Palazzo - seat of today's Municipal Administration - we find the very high Torre del Mangia, from which - after the shock of the "just" 88 meters high! - we will be able to admire Siena in all its timeless beauty.

3 - Santa Maria della Scala Museum Complex

It was originally a hospital facility, designed to support the poor, pilgrims and abandoned children. Today Santa Maria della Scala, located on the Via Francigena a few steps from the Cathedral of Siena, represents one of the most important and impressive museum complexes in the city, capable of satisfying all kinds of tourists, with its wide range of exhibitions ranging from archeology to contemporary art, winking at the little ones with an Art Museum specially designed for them.

4 - Siena Cathedral

Simply a masterpiece. If the exterior of the suggestive Siena Cathedral - in black and white, with the circular-shaped glass window that dominates the main facade - will delight your view, wait until you visit its sumptuous interiors. The floors, which tell a story with their evocative impressed images; there Piccolomini Library, the homonymous Chapel, Pulpit made by Nicola Pisano, one of the many great artists who, together with michelangelo e Pinturicchio, have made the Duomo a jewel of Sienese art and beyond.

5 - National Picture Gallery

All the masterpieces of Sienese art from the origins to the sixteenth century they are enclosed within the three floors that make up the National Art Gallery of the city. From Duccio to Simone Martini, from Lorenzo Lotto to Pietro and Ambrogio Lorenzetti, the rich collection of works housed in the Pinacoteca will captivate you.

6 - Teatro dei Rozzi

We return to the heart of Siena to get to know one of the most significant cultural attractions of the city, the Teatro dei Rozzi. Located in the center, the theater, born thanks to the inventiveness of the sixteenth-century Rozzi congregation, is still very active today and boasts the presence of its Academy. Its capacity - 499 seats - allows it to host musical, opera and theatrical events of great importance.

8 - Montepulciano

Although the center of Siena offers, in every corner of the street, terrific attractions, it is worthwhile to bring a car and explore the nearby villages, which retain all the medieval character that already distinguishes the city. Montepulciano, just an hour's drive from Siena, also gives its name to a well-known wine, it is targeted every year by thousands of Italian and foreign tourists, who come to admire the top attractions of the town: the Piazza Grande, Duomo and the fourteenth century Town Hall.

9 - Abbey of San Galgano and Spada in the Rock

It is located in San Galgano (about 45 minutes from Siena) the spectacular Basilica of San Galgano, religious building built with a Latin cross plan, with three naves, very long (72 meters of building) and lacking a roof. Despite this "small" detail, the attraction, erected in 1218, takes your breath away not only for its aesthetics, but also and above all for its turbulent history, made up of ups and downs. Not far from the Abbey, we can admire the legendary sword in the stone driven by Galgano Guidotti, which refers to another sword, of British memory.

10 - Montalcino

Let us leave the Sienese borders once again, direction Montalcino. The homeland of the Brunello - the village is known for its wine production - it deserves a thorough visit also for the presence of numerous attractions of a high historical-cultural level. The presence of thirteenth-century walls surrounding the town give a timeless charm to Montalcino, full of palaces, craft shops and churches. Do not miss the visit to Fourteenth-century fortress.
